Looking for a 3.0 Z4 - couple questions!

Hi all, been lurking around for a while, I'm currently selling my Audi TT 225.
I am interested in buying a Z4, it has to be the 3ltr version with a manual gearbox, preferably In grey! :driving:

Couple things, my budget is £6000-£6500 so that does limit me to 2003/04 cars, if well maintained, are these early models relatively reliable?
Also with my budget I'm looking at higher mileage cars, my TT has just hit 99k miles, and still runs like new, very sharp etc, I'm assuming the Z4 also holds its miles well? Is this the case?

I have come from a long list of turbo/supercharged cars, I'm hoping I don't miss the 'feeling' of a turbo, anyone else come from the dark side and don't miss the turbo? :fuelfire:

Thanks for looking!

You should be able to get a 2005 model for that, surely?

I paid £6500 for my 03 3.0i 3 years ago. I bought it with 62k miles and it's currently on 100k. Very reliable engine. Few small issues such as starter motor, battery, couple of sensors, expansion tank, belts etc. All age related stuff really. Engine itself is bulletproof.

Hi,
Just to give you some confidence in the older high mileage cars..

I bought my December 2004 Z4 soft top 3.0 a year ago in June 2014 for £4750 Full main dealer device history.

It had 82,000 miles on the clock. It now sits at 108,000 miles. 26,000 trouble free miles. She takes a litre of Shell 0w30 ultra extra every 2000 miles.

I've had to replace the front wishbone bushes. Pretty standard z4 stuff.

Great car, love it. I sold my gsxr 600 which was tracked regularly to buy the Z4 and don't really regret it at all. Have comparable fun, all be it a bit more refined.

Excellent - thank you :)

Pity you're not looking for a black Auto Z4 and have a grand of change in your pocket, mine's going up for sale this weekend.

Good luck with the search. £6k will get you a decent 05 or 06, possibly even a facelift with a few more miles/lower spec. Plenty out there.

Until my recent Z purchase I've been a hard-core Audi man. I've a TT225 and an A6 TDI 1.9, and previously had an A6 3.0TDI, and A4 2.0TDi and an A6 1.8T. The Z is a very different experience, I'm not sure its better or worse, just different. The most obvious point being the torque is readily there, you don't have to focus on being in the right gear to find the turbo power band, and the 3.0 has a far wider band than any of the turbos. But Audi are not pure, they don't have the configuration or balance. I think it is probably easier to go fast in an Audi, requiring more finesse and skill in the Z, but then that makes it more fun! Have a go and enjoy. :driving:

I've gotta mapped 330D as my DD which is obviously a torque monster (in comparison) and a 3.0 Z for weekends and I don't find the Z asthmatic, I'm not sure I could go back to something like a S2K after the 330D but the Z 3.0 is large capacity engine in a relativity low state of tune (given the engine size) so has quite a flexible engine in comparison to other non turbo engines.

Thanks for all the comments,

I'm from Harlow, in Essex, im going to view a nice 54 plate in grey, in great condition (looking at the pictures!) with 67k miles, and Full history, at the weekend, I cant wait  It has the BMW MV2 alloys which I think look spot on the Z4!
Ill give it a drive and see what I think, I have a feeling I will love it!

I have just bought a 3.0l manual Z4, paid £5600 for an 03 plate, with 70k on the clock.

When I was looking only a month or so ago it seemed £6k would get you a 2l face lift or a well looked after Pre facelift. personally I would take a well looked after, lower mileage 3.0 over a 2L.

I have come from a cooper s JCW, a focus st 225 and more recently a Golf GTI and personally I don't miss the turbo. Simply because the Z4 still goes really well and is a different driving experience all together, and it stuck to the arse of a Scooby the other day ;)

As long as you check the basics they seems pretty solid cars, although I have had a problem with my Window Regulator already!! :headbang:

When I was looking I came across a fair few dogs, found looking private was best at the moment, the dealers seem to all have over priced s**t.

Hope the search goes well!
