After looking at the 3.0s I've decided I want something more economic and cheaper on insurance!

If anyones selling a 2.0 or 2.2 I'm interested; any color considered.
FSH is a must, so is leather seats.
low mileage preferably.

Upgraded stereo ,sat nav, alloys, sport seats are a bonus.

Plenty for sale, how about phoning around to view some?

It sounds like effort though..... I'm doing that too

does this sound like a decent car....
2.2L , fsh, 12 month mot , 04 plate, 54,000 miles
Manual
Petrol
Silver
SAT NAV, FULL LEATHER,18" COMPOSITE ALLOYS.CARVER Hi-Fi UPGRADE,CRUISE CONTROL,BLUETOOTH,PARKING SENSORS.

priced at £7,000.

Personally I would rather have a higher mileage 3.0 :)

But on a serious note 2.2 insurance isn't gonna be that much cheaper than a 3.0 tax is not much more and the 3.0 achieves 31mpg combined!!

Ontop of that you get sport button, auto lights wipers and mirror. I wouldn't get anything less that a 3.0 but that's just me!

I've been driving for like 4 months and I'm currently in a saxo.
Ive been told the 3.0 can get tail happy, I think the difference is about £500 on the insurance for myself.

so yeah, no experience in a fast car at all.

You can even get insured anything other than a shopping car after 4 months? As far as tail happy goes, you'd have to be provoking it in the dry in any engined car and they will all let slip in the wet without care. I'd seriously recommend some skid pan training for you, breaking traction isn't all that scary if you're familiar with it and know ho to deal with it. I'd say in most cases where some one looses control of a car it was made worse by there own reactions.

Z4 is not for you! It will be round a lamppost before we know it !!

To be fair statistically he will regardless of the car, restricting myself to a 1.4 Sunny didn't stop me from doing so in my youth:) If anything smaller cars can give you too much confidence.

Maybe a bit unfair lol

I started in a saxo (VTR) but had that for 2 years before getting a z4.

Honestly though, it's less about how fast the car is, more about your experience and maturity. Experience you say you haven't got, maturity is hard to come by on a nice day on an open road.

Personally, I'd say wait at least until you have a year under your belt and then you could go for either 2.2 or an 3.0. If you feel sensible enough now and have the money the buy whatever you want, I went with a 2.2 and don't regret it, but a 3.0 would be nice (if I was to upgrade though it would only be to an M)

Im a sensible driver but 3.0 is enough to tempt anyone to be a little heavy footed. :headbang:

I passed my test 2 years ago, only started driving in november.... 2 years with no driving, then an hour into driving after 2 years I was on the motorway (never drove on one before), the rest is history...done like 4,000 motorway miles already.

not had any near misses as far as driving goes...had a few near misses pulling out though

Either wait a little bit, I'd say another year.

Or if you don't want to wait, take some advanced training like mentioned above. Skid pan and such, it will give you more experience.

Go for it , 2.0 - 2-2 makes sense , only bummer is once you have mastered it your wish you got the 3.0. I do not think there tail happy at all with the traction control it pretty hard to lose the back end you have to be pushing it pretty hard.....

My first car was a Fiesta and I wrote that off in the first 3 months  , but after that I ended buying a Impreza at 18 loved it! , but coz it does have power you take a bit more easy I find as you have nothing to prove....

The thing to remember regardless of the engine is that in a car like the Z4 visibility is completely different to your standard hatch back. You're low down and cocooned which takes a lot of adjusting to when your only driving has been in little cars that feel like you're sat on them and clear visibility all round.

A friend of mine went for a new shape TT at a young age up from a Fiat Panda and his first couple of weeks he was curbing it for fun and hugely cautious in traffic because he felt like he just couldn't see out of it.

One good thing about it though is he's very mindful of how expensive the car is and that he won't be able to afford the insurance with any accidents or points on his license so it keeps him honest.

whats this worth, considering current prices being at 6k??

whats the difference between the 5 and 6 speed gearboxs

and what kind of price difference is there between the 2.2s,2.5s and 3.0s

Don't believe what the nanny state may tell u, size does matter.

3.0's tend to be better spec'd & if you look at reliability, bigger engines though not immune tend to be more durable & thus more reliable than their smaller brethren.

Don't want to give mine the kiss of death, but my 3.0 hasn't missed a beat (other than the windows that had a mind of their own & a dodgy bonnet sensor, both now sorted)

Take a deep breath & get a 2.5 or 3.0, they're close to bullet proof

From what I've seen of the used market the price diff between different engines isn't huge likely due to perception of the larger engines being more costly to run attracting people to smaller engines. Truth is though the 6 speed gear box on the 3l really helps it on the mpg front and insurance wise best to check for your self on the comparison sites but a 2.2 is only £16 cheaper for me than a 3l.
