looking at a 335i or 335d coupe has anyone have/owned one to know what to look out for,
good points  and bad points  I see some of the 335i come with the 7 speed dct would like to know
what this is like to live with or is the standard auto a better bet.

Cheers all,

IIRC, Inkey$ had a 335i (for his usual 15 minutes) so you may be able to get some pointers off him

A little while ago I had a 335d. I think it was a fabulous car for 90% of the time, as a gt car it was great but when you really wanted a bit of fun the auto gearbox ruined it for me. Mine was one of the early ones, a 56 plate and I understand the newer auto boxes are much better.

I would have another but this time I'd have a petrol and a manual or a 330d manual and get it remapped.

The 335i is the same setup as our e89 35i/is's.

The DCT is fantastic, newer autos are also good. Later 335i's have the N55, which would be my choice if a daily car as they're a bit more reliable. Older models have the N54 motor which is very good but has issues with injectors, pumps, turbos, intake fouling and a few other niggles. It sounds like a bad list, but I've only had an issue with the fuel pump on mine (35i). As an engine though, the N54 is very very good.

My brother had a 'D' a few years back. The torque is immense, but its a diesel after all and therefore doesn't rev like a petrol, doesn't sound like a petrol, all the while not really being that much more MPG efficient than the petrol. He managed 29MPG around town in the D.

Ran 335d 58 plate for 4 years without any problems, great car. Remapped it,350bhp 700nm. Very quick & 40mpg can't really beat that. Auto gearbox was very good, not a crisp as the dct but still nice & precise. I never had any problems with the car. Changed the run flats to Michelin pss & that's all the car cost me in 4 years tyres, lots of rear ones lol :D I think if your doing a lot of miles & want a bit of performance it's the perfect package. The only thing missing is the exhaust note :( 16ed1a2d.jpg4b95efce.jpg77ad4d26.jpg

Yep. Had a fully loaded 57 plate, black with lemon dakota saloon 335i MSport [for 16 minutes actually Perry].

Lovely car, just didn't need a fast family car in the garage when we had a London, runaround, dustcart Mk4 Golf as well.

Tried the paddle shift version. Didn't like it. Think the manual is rarer too. Mine had a gorgeous, creamy engine and sounds pretty good when wound up.

Things to watch out for are pretty much mainly around turbo waste gates. If you rev and hear a rattle underneath from the overrun then it's a big job. Either buy done, with warranty that covers it or a model where they've addressed it. Thats not to say they all go of course; you only ever hear about the ones that do and that can skew the characteristics of a car.

Don't know a thing about the diesel Im afraid. I do know though that a remapped 330i/d is every bit as quick though. Apparently they are extremely customisable through the ECU. Just in case you need more choice as there are more of those on the road than 330s.

Hope that helps out.

Good cars, as mentioned DCT was available in later models 2008? almost bought one before the Zed. Saloon or wagon guise make for an interesting family taxi
