This here w***er has orders to RAF Lakenheath Airbase!
It's hitting the fan now!
Bloody Hell!

Unfortunately, it won't happen until around September. So ya'll have times to send your daughters away, change the locks, install that new security system you wanted, etc.

I guess I could start reading insurance threads now. Though I'm thinking USAA will cover me there.

I think my biggest worry about going is just the driving on the other side of the road bit. What about lights? I saw some crazy requirements for lights on a car, is an American Spec Z4 good with no adjustments? I recall them saying the same thing in regards to vehicle lights for my truck when I went to Germany and I didn't have to do anything to it....so I'm hoping it's the same in this case.

I'm going to be frozen when I'm there. I saw that in the summer it doesn't go over 75 degrees F over there! WTF, I'll be going from dry triple digit temperature sunshine, to cold biting rain!
Ack, I need a hardtop.

Can't recall if US lights have asymetric beam pattern. If so they'll need some conversion or deflector to adoid dazzilng oncoming drivers. Tehre are so many US mlitary guys around the airbases that it'll be well trodden process.

Anyway it'll be fun. Despite the weather many of the US guys who I 4 wheel with never want to go home.

I don't have Xenon's on mine, so maybe that will help.

I'm sure I'll have fun out there. I partied with some Brits at Diego Garcia, ton o fun!

Oh I forgot the most important question.....Anyone on the forum live any where's near Lakenheath? I'm hoping for a lot of cruising around

Congratulations Aebous.

I'm sure you'll find us "just dandy" over here on this side of the pond.

How long is your posting for? 1 year? 2 years? More?

You might need to get a Rabies shot before UK immigration lets you in - You will need to speak to your medic on your base to confirm

I live nowhere near Lakenheath Airbase thank god, but look forward to travelling down to share a pint of warm beer.

Good oh, maybe you can come on a Spokey cruise sometime and see if you can actually drive that thing? :poke: :fuelfire:

ETA: Unfortunately, I'm fairly close to Lakenheath.

Ahh September - you'll have about a month of ~18C/64F and its all down hill from there! Will be a bit of a shock coming from around LA (Im guessing!)

Do they honestly let you container your car over?? That's rather cool i must say! Give us all a shout closer the time, ill be up for popping down to a meet from Sheffield

Aebous, excellent new...
I spent some time in the UK many year ago and you will love it except for the different language...

US to Germany would have been fine for the lights as they drive on the same side of the road ... :)

The official requirements are that you have to tape part of your light off, or change them for UK spec ones. Having said that, when I drive to mainland Europe I don't tape the lights on either the Z4 nor the X5. Never get flashed on the Z, but am permanently flashed in the X5 though ...

That will be about 20 miles from me.

I'm surrounded by American on Molesworth, Alconbury and Lakenheath.

Most drive US spec cars (even saw an Escallade the other day) with sometimes extra side lights (white).

You will get to buy fuel at US prices, drink in English pubs full of Americans, and learn to drive on the correct side of the road.

It will build your character, and your ability to generate more body heat. It is freezing here at the moment and the roads get covered in salt every night to increase BMW business selling new alloys!

When do you arrive?

Sceptre

Probably enough beer, I've been slacking as of late. I'm sure ya'll will drink me under.
I'm requesting my port call be Aug-September, I'm probably going to ship the car early from here so it can be there when I arrive. I'm currently projected to stay for 2 years. I'm in for quite a shock weather wise, over here in September it's about upper 90's, maybe 80's depending on the year. I'm quite nervous about driving on the other side of the road.....and passing on the right?! I'm going to have unlearn alot of habits.

But yeah they'll let me take the car over there. Should be fun getting the wtf happened to the steering wheel looks.
Oh and I can't wait to learn proper english :D

You'll learn there is no proper English to be found, at least in the social circles you'll mix in. I would think that watching telly might do you right. In the Midlands it seemed like I would go a mile or 2 and the local lexicon would adjust ever so slightly.

Learn to drive in the UK and you'll finally know what it is to have a licence to be proud of.

Learn to play snooker.

Learn to eat food without touching it with your fingers, ie eat with a knife and fork at the same time.

Learn to say please and thank you several hundred times a day.

Learn that English is the national language but customer service is not spoken in the UK.

Learn that "Rule Britannia" sounds like a very familiar American tune.

Learn that many things you won't like you'll miss like hell once you leave the UK.

Learn that although we may be allies that doesn't apply to their women.

Learn that football is not a family spectator sport.

Learn Celsious.

Don't worry about the driving. The road signs are excellent, you cannot go on the wrong side. You should worry about never going to see the sun anymore. :headbang: Their beer is the best. Get used to the metric system. :)

Wait people can't eat without using thier hands??

If that applies to chicken and ribs, then sir, I must decline all social rules and pig out.

I fully intend on finding and uhm "entertaining" all the UK women I can. Something about that accent is oh so nice. Of course I do I have my heart set on a scottish/irish lass.

Is Celsious/Celsius a disease? I hear it's rather catchy over there.

I've been to Germany so I'm used to the celsius/metric system with everything in Kilo's
Hell I might even try to switch all my stuff to Kilo's this time.
I heard today they have Killkenny around Lakenheath. That sirs is the best beer I have ever had the pleasure of drinking.

Pronunciation rules will change like the English weather: Colwich vs Norwich.
Learn to pronounce some Welsh names like: LLandudno or Aberystwyth.
Understand why English beer is served warmer than lager type beers.
Cuppa will be a brand new word for your personal dictionary.
Learn that words and phrases like: slash, taking the piss, nick and ta, have different meanings (there are hundreds like those btw).
You'll need to know what colors to wear when England plays Scotland (or Wales) in a Rugby match.
Learn what a page 3 girl is.
Tea has several meanings.
Cell phone = US
Mobile (pronounced mo - bile) phone = UK

And above all else: give them, the host country and the host country people, respect. You are a guest in the UK. It is not the US, we are not bigger, faster or better than them or anyone else. When you want to brag...go back on base and brag.

To quote a wise man: "I have often regretted things that I have said, but only rarely have I ever regretted my silence."

Have fun, see the sights, you'll be fine.

Aebous you'll be fine with the driving have driven in the US Europe and here and find you soon get used to it the only thing i noticed in the US is people drive a lot slower on Motorways(freeways) and theres more room.

We do get some hot weather but its real hit and miss can be 90 at easter then only 60 in mid summer.

Remember Rubbers here are for correcting mistakes not preventing them and pants go under your trousers :D

Want to eat with your hands try a Doner Kebab normally after a few beers :D

Had a friend move up to Lakenheath lives very close to the base impressive sight used to drive past the main gates its like another town behind that fence even spotted car dealerships inside :o and the noise from the F15s doing touch and goes was amazing.

Whatever you get up to i hope your stay is a warm and pleasant one
