My longest commute (i.e. there & back all in one day) was about 650 miles. Liverpool to Monmouth to London to Barnard Castle to Liverpool. Departed 4am, got back home at 11pm with about 1 hour at each site. Still about twice as quick as public transport and half the cost.
My longest regular commute was the 6 months I spend doing the 230 miles each way from Liverpool to Bexley Heath (Monday out, Friday return) - again, it was quicker/cheaper than the train.
did you have a break every 2.5 hours and did you have the next day off to recover?
