Long slumber...Time to wake Black Betty.....

I've owned this car for four years now. The last two years winter slumbers were a breeze. Left on a trickle charge, I could always go out on a decent day and take her for a run and put her back.

This winter, was not so nice. As the snow mounted, my gravel road was always way to mucky to even attempt the quarter mile to get to black top, let alone all the salt layed out on the roadways to melt it.

So after a few rains in the early spring, and judging the salt was now gone, the mucky road had dried up enough, I wondered out to the shed where Betty slept and took the charger off and sat in the seat. I turned the key and she turned right over. I let her warm up as I deflated the tires air pressure to nominal, as I had pressurized to 40LBS to keep flat spots at a minimum.

Looking over the gauges and checks everything was at a happy spot. So I backed out, and took her for the 1st drive in five months.

Five miles out the warning light for bulb out came on. Heh, what ever, it's just a bulb. During a stop, I got out and lit every bulb up, indicators, brakes, reverse, turn signals, headlights......all worked. Made me go ????

So I got home and parked, and as I was helping the wife wash dish's, I looked out at the car in the shed, and it's getting dark, and I see my right back running light is on. I unhooked the battery cable after seeing the front running lite was on also. Save the battery save the juice was my thought.

So the next morning I hooked the battery back up. Drove Betty to work. Got out and looked back to see the running lights on again. Unhook battery. On the way home at a four way stop, a truck with a chrome bumper exposed to me that my right hand turn signal was acting like a brake lamp.

So for the last three weeks I have come to find, a wire in the right hand side head light has rubbed excessively, shorted out the control modual for my head light switch, at the tune of $500 bucks. And from the looks of the wires in both headlights, they are cracking and ready to rot off, so I get the reason to buy new headlight assembly's and be done with restoring the headlights every spring so they look good.

Mind you, zenon assembly's do not come cheap.

I still love this car, as her body style is still modern, and timeless.
Know it's been a long time since I posted, but you don't need to when she just keeps on going.

Add on: I live in Kansas, the wife has a dream of driving it to the California coast line and going up route 1 for our 40th anniversary. Wine food and the car. I'm at 85% of getting this car ready to make that happen for her, tho I keep telling her we are no where close yet.
Once I know the drive line is good, as that flex joint and center mount and u-jount is replaced I know it will be ready for another 100000 miles. I'm at just over 90000 now.

Welcome back mate- you may need a new battery if you are getting electronic gremlins.
looks like he traced it to shorted wiring (along with deteriorating wiring in the headlights).
OP, Kansas to Calif. might be more impressive if you said how far it is  . Bit like me saying I'm planning on driving from Invercargill to Auckland :P .
Nice to hear from you again, and that you're still loving the Z4 despite the latest 'glitch'
