London Marathon

Anyone else running in the London Marathon in April?

I managed to get a charity place and am following a training schedule. Currently contemplating the three mile fast run I have planned before work tomorrow then the 18 miler on Sunday.

I used to look forward to weekends...

Not me, but I live on Blackheath and get woken every year by the start. Will be out there cheering you all on!

Not the marathon but I'm in the ballot for the ride 100 again this year. Run by same people as marathon and last year was fantastic, 100 miles in 6h45m going try and break 6 hours this year.

Did it in 1984 but not this year. Prefer cycling nowadays.

Respect to all entrants nevertheless. Something everyone should attempt at least once. It's not easy and more a question of mind over matter irrespective of your level of fitness and age,

I've done London 4 times....run it twice, walked it once and run/walk once. Fastest time was 4:44, slowest was just over 7hrs!

Its not the actual course that kills you, its the training! Put the training in, and you'll enjoy the day (well, sort of!).

I used to dread the long runs in training...its ok for the whippets who can do 20 miles in 5 minutes, but for me it was more like 4 hours, in all conditions!

Now I do no excercise at all and cant think how I used to do it!

So best wishes to you and I hope it goes well and you have a great day - the crowds are amazing.

Which charity...hows the fundraising going (I always found that harder than the training!).

Some great advice and encouragement, thank you.

The training is tough but I'm aiming for a sub 4 hour time so it isn't going to happen unless I'm prepared. I'm raising money for Shelter, the homelessness charity, so if anyone's feeling generous please visit

Well done. Sub 4 is a real target.

What sort of mile times are you doing?

Another tip I just remembered....watch the floor at and after drinks stations....lots of ankle breaking bottles on the floor!

Useful tip, KMW, thanks. I'm fairly comfortable at 8:30 miles although the sprints in my training schedule are supposed to be at 7:10 which is quite tough. The hardest bit is doing a full day at work and then going out in the evening for a five miler before eating. And did I mention the cold and wet?

Still, what is man (or woman) without a challenge, target or goal? Do we all not need something to drive us, an ambition or desire; sometimes to attain, sometimes fall short?

I applaud you. I've never done a full marathon but intend to one day. I've done plenty of half marathons but I haven't really done much exercise in the last couple of years. I was getting pretty quick - I'd done sub-20m 5km on a few occasions and a 4:56 mile (once and it near killed me).

I agree with everything Lillywhite said earlier in the thread.

Good luck, keep us updated on your progress
