London commuters

Can anyone suggest a decent place to move to outside London but from where I could get to a Central London job door to door in say 1 hour 15 mins max ?

I want a bit more house for my money and the odd tree and/or a squirrel here and there would be good. :D

depends where 'Central London' is and whether your office/place of work is close to a mainline station (which will dictate initial direction out of town) or a Tube station, as well as how far you would be from a railway station at your home.

I mean Didcot-Paddington = 45 minutes for example. But by the time I drove to the station, parked, waited for the train, got off at Paddington, did the Circle Line and walked to the office near Liverpool Street it was a five hour round trip...and that was with no delays....

Thats why I chucked it all in and moved to Wales

Seems a bit extreme, no wonder you gave it up.

My commute is currently 1 hour door to door. That includes a 20 minute overland journey. But if I check timetables it looks like you can get in from places outside the M25 in 35 to 40 mins. Thats only another 15 to 20 minutes,..plus maybe a bit more hassle getting to the station. Maybe I'm kidding myself at 1 hour 15, ...maybe 1 hour 30.

How did it get to 2.5 hours either way for you ?

It was all the little bits you forget about....get car out - drive to station - park - get parking ticket - put in car - walk long way to platform - wait for train - train journey - get off - walk long way to Underground - wait for Tube - Tube - change trains - get off Tube - walk to office.....all adds up :(

I suppose I'm just saying make sure you add all the little bits in as the location of stations at each end makes a big difference, but if you're getting 25% more house its sometimes worth it....

On the other side of the coin I used to work in central Oxford years ago about six miles from where I lived.....I then moved to a job in Harrow that was 50 miles away and I could get there door to door quicker than my old job :headbang:

Thanks for the good advice.

It just seems to me that you can move a fair distance away from London and only add a bit more to the commute. I just need to discover somewhere that is worth living and has regular overland trains that take about 35 mins.

How about down here in Kent, the garden of England, High speed link into london from Ashford 35 mins,,

EDIT, thats about 50 odd miles out of central London btw

Will check it out thanks. But am already in Kent, ...Bromley way. I've always felt a bit hemmed in here...on one side you have the sea (and not much to talk about on the coast...) and on the other side you have London getting in the way of the rest of the country.

Whats the parking like at Ashford station ? is there enough of it ?

I dont personally commute, but I have several friends who do from Ashford on the high speed link, and say its great and i believe there is loads of parking at Ashford,

i dont know about the sea lol although that is close, but also from there is some lovely quaint villages, e.g Pluckley (the most haunted village in the UK alledgedly) Egerton, i could go on, bear in mind this is rolling field Kent countryside, not a bit like Bromley (no offence)

No offence taken. Bromley is crap.

Beaconsfield......out west....

Beaconsfield.......extremely civilised (expensive), and about 20 minutes from Marylebone (standing) on a fast train

Surrey...

Redhill/Reigate area trains to and from London Bridge or Victoria in 35-40 mins...

I live in Redhill and work in Chiswick - one train and a cycle ride, 1hr 10 mins door to door, 1hr 20 using (3) overland trains.

Can't see any fast trains to London from Beaconsfield :?

Have a look at the Chiltern Railways website. I remember the fast trains taking 20 minutes when I was a kid, but it looks like they now take 30 min. Perhaps I was more excitable a decade ago
I can drive to my parents from where I live in SW London in well under 30 minutes...although I would deny that if plod was listening :driving: :P

How far North would you go ?

Peterborough is 45 mins from Kings Cross and then a 10 minute tube ride to Liverpool Street on the Circle or a 10 minute tube to Leics Sq/Covent Garden on the Piccadilly.

Grantham is only 1 hour 5 mins from Kings Cross.

Having said all of that they aren't as nice as Beaconsfield ! But you'd get a lot of house for your money !

I don't commute to London every day (only a couple of times a week) and I can get from my house in North Notts to my offices on either Bishopsgate or Covent Garden in 2 hours. That's a 30 minute ,20 mile drive to the station, 1.17 on the train and 10-15 mins tube.

I think Lichfield is only about 1 hour away from Euston as well on the fast trains or have you thought about somewhere like Cambridge ?

I did sutton coldfield (birmingham) to euston (fitzrovia) 5 days a week for just over 2 years - cost over £900 a month and took 4 hours each day. It killed all home/social life due to being tired each evening, with the weekends only seen as a reprieve.

i would never do such a commute again, nor recommend it!

Have you tried the commuting websites like commute to? Put in your destination and desired travel time and it will suggest places that meet that target and give you an idea of how regular the service is. We had been thinking along the same lines but we're thinking of staying in town a bit longer as we still like to go out and it's just easier! My commute is literally 5 mins walk at the moment so I'm in no rush to move!
