Lollipop bush replacement..

Whilst I've been fettling the brakes on the Zed recently, I've had the wheels on and off several times. When removing and reinstalling the front caliper bracket bolts with a 2' breaker bar, I noted some movement of the rear of the lower wishbones in the "lollipop" bush area. Now I know there will always be some "give" in a rubber bush, especially when using a 2' lever, but it got me wondering..

I have slightly "nervous" steering at speed, yes I know it's a Z4 trait, and having RFT's doesn't help, but obviously, any movement in the rear bushes could contribute to this.

So, as I have a 20t bench press in the garage, I am going to change these at the weekend. I've ordered a pair of Meyle HD bushes, for £21.10 delivered from this link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221631383837 Has anyone changed these themselves? I presume my press will be up to the job, and I understand that the lollipops will easily pull off from the arm ends when unbolted, yes?

Anything else to be aware of?

Hi Mike,

Its a pretty straight forward job, however the old lollipops wont just pull off once unbolted, if you have a proper removal tool then it will be straight forward.

I didn't and had to use a lump hammer and chisel. I actually ended up heating the old bush with a blow touch to make is easier.

I replaced mine for polly bushes.
You will be fine with that press. Just making sure you have bushes shims and a press tool the right size. Sockets v blocks and bits of wood are your friends on a press as i am sure you know.

I replaced mine recently using a set of those pullers - they're not bad but not great either as, unless you get it lined up just right, the centre rod tends to slip off the (slightly domed) end of the wishbone. It's a good idea to lubricate the wishbone end with washing up liquid as this helps them slide off easier - one of mine came off easily the other was a real pig

I don't have a press so I just bought complete new meyle HD lollipops http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301049292617

This video shows the process - although it takes a darn sight longer when you're on your back under a car that's up on axle stands

I did mine a couple of months back, they were easy enough to get off but god dam could I not get the new ones back on. I tried everything levering, hammering etc, until I read a comment that said put a little bit of soapy water on the end of the wishbone first. The buggers went straight on then.

Just replaced mine - replaced the whole unit for a sake of a few £ rather than just the bush. Very easy. Unbolt, take off lower arm, reassemble. You may need an aligment check afterwards, don't forget, as this could help with wandering front end too.

I managed to get them lined up OK in the end but it took a couple of attempts to get it right

I wouldn't use a holesaw under that sort of load, the hardened teeth could easily shatter causing eye injury. I have a full set of pressing sleeves, which are designed for the job.

You don't need to go anywhere near the teeth, put it upside down.

I used a three legged puller too. I used a centre punch to put a location dent/hole in the back off the front arm.This stopped the puller falling off the end. Sockets a good idea too. Took seconds to get it off with the help of my nut gun !
