LOL, just what we need

Had a quick trawl round ebay for Z4M-related stuff and found this:

Just what we need... sharper throttle response!

It is a device that improves acceleration by continuously measuring and converting the digital signal provided by the ECT’s potentiometer, and providing the ECM with a new and altered signal

I didn't know I had a potentiometer!

Funnily enough these things do actually work! There is a throttle delay between the pedal sender and the servo that opens the throttles. The thing is though, you can just remap the settings in the ECU and gain the same result without fitting a seperate unit. The OEM system is designed so that when you floor the pedal the servo gradually opens the throttles to give you a smooth pick up, this delay is slightly reduced when you hit the sport button. If you prefer though you can simply remap the ECU to snap the throttles open instantly rather than give a smooth progression. Most remaps concentrate on areas like that, it's not so much a case of squeezing more power from the car but improving all of it's responses.

It's a similar thing to adding a resistor to you Mass Air Flow Sensor to trick the ECU into giving a richer mixture, it works but you can also mess around with the mixture settings when you map the car and that way you don't have to splice bits into your electrical system.

Yes, but the throttle response on the Z4MC is lightning fast even without the sport button pressed. With the button pressed, it's even faster. Believe me, you really don't want it any sharper...

Obviously some people do otherwise these things wouldn't be for sale. Besides, they fit a lot more than just the Z4M. I don't understand why you were so quick to laugh about throttle delay units. We used them at Simpsons on the CSL race cars before we got remap software. They work great and sharpen up the engine respose time dramaticaly. If you don't want one, don't buy one but there's nothing laughable about them.

By that argument, nor would 'electric superchargers'.

Blimey, lighten up. It was just a lightheated response to seeing a device that sharpens up an already over-sharp throttle. By the other lol responses, it appears that others thought that way too.

I think most people probably thought it wouldn't work or be of any benefit otherwise they wouldn't find the concept funny. The same can be said for electric superchargers. Maybe they give you some extra power and maybe they don't, I've never tried one but I won't dismiss the idea and laugh about it until I've tried it or have some proof of the results. What's funny about the concept? Is it because it's electrical and not mechanical? So's my power steering but it works fine.

:headbang:

Which bit don't you get? Nobody's laughing at the concept, just the application. Read the advert: "The ECT system (Electronic Throttle Control) – also known as drive-by-wire – has the unfortunate downside of delayed throttle response and subdued acceleration," -- delayed throttle response and subdued acceleration are not attributes that you would normally associate with a Z4MC.

Still, a joke's not funny if you have to explain it.

And Spongebob absorbs all punches, as seen in the episode 'The Bully'

My point is that there's always room for improvement ( if you want it ) and these things do exactly that. Sorry, maybe I don't get it but I still can't see anything funny about it. Would it be funny because someone wanted to supercharge their Z4M to get more power when perhaps in your opinion it already has enough?

Have you driven a Z4MC? The throttle response is ridiculous. More so with the sport button switched on. Check any of the reviews and they will say the same thing.

Yes, plus plenty of M3's and CSL's before and after fitting one of these units and the difference is very noticable despite how good we thought it was originally. For all it costs it was a no brainer mod. Like I said, nowadays we don't have to use them because we can set the throttle response as high as we like through mapping but if you don't want to map the ECU and just want a bit more throttle response then what's wrong with that?

Good, I've got to go to work!! :D . I like a bit of intense discussion on these threads somtimes, it beats the usual " what's the best way to pick my nose while shifting from 2nd to 3rd " or " Oh my Got I've got a stonechip " topics!
