Locking the car with the top down question

Isn't it the Seat Occupancy sensors rather than proximity - you can wave you arms about inside & it won't go off, but if a cat jumps in or something it starts beeping.

I think if you leant in & pressed the door unlock button it would trigger the alarm, but im gonna try it..

Pretty sure mine is proximity... i once left my phone in the little gap behind the handbreak (under the rear cubby door) reached in to get it with the roof down and the alarm went off.

I set m4rrt's alarm off by pointing at something while roof was down, so early cars certainly have proximity

Last time I checked the glove box doesn't lock when I lock the car - instead it has it's own key lock on the handle...

Thanks for the heads up about the centre box unlocking when pressing the centre console unlock button though! I'll have to do the mod linked to on Shipkiler's site!

I too only leave the roof down if in a safe area when I know I'll only be a couple of minutes

The glovebox on my facelift def locks....

Left the roof down on my drive and my sister tried to steal my sweets in my glovebox... only to trigger the alarm.. but my sweets were locked safe in there!!

Are you sure, cant see why you would have the option to lock it if it locked automatically.

I'll have to double check this on the weekend.... but i am sure my sister said she tried to open it and thought i locked it.

OK, i checked it on my car yesterday evening.

Reminder : 2003 roadster, no alarm, no mod (at least on the electrical part :p).

Roof down, windows up, car is locked with the key button (and me inside). Key is removed from the ignition thingy and held at a reasonable distance to avoid any RF detection of the key transponder (if any).
In this configuration, car locked by the key button, my central storage compartment between the seats is locked. The lock button inside the car is not functionning, it does NOTHING. The trunk button is also completely deactivated. I even tried to open the doors with the handle : IT DOES NOT WORK. So, when you lock the car with the key button, it locks the car completely.

The only thing which is not locked electrically is the glove box, since it has a separate, mechanical lock. You have to lock it manually by inserting the key in the lock.

Again, this is the case on MY car, a 2003 roadster with no mod (none that i'm aware of, at least).

I double checked this morning and am pleased to report the exact same result as Shooter on my 03 2.5i roadster. I was pleased to find that when locked the unlock button in front of the handbrake had no effect on the central storage compartment (it remained locked).

So I can keep on doing what I've been doing and rest assured that the valuables are safe!

Duly noted, shooter. I should have said that on SOME Z4Rs, the central locking button is a problem. I edited my previous post to clear that up and to make it less obvious to would be villians doing their research!

Checked mine today... and your quite right it didnt lock... no idea how she couldnt open it!

A leasson learnt here... i need to keep my valuables in the centre compartment not the glovebox... so thats my sweets out of the glovebox and into the centre compartment and my money back into the glovebox
