Locking nut

I’ve gone and lost the sodding thing and there is nothing in the the pack that I got when I bought it that would indicate what code it is.

Anyone know what to do?

What sort of locking nut? To fit what?

It’s a standard bmw one I assume. Was on the car when I got it and looks like pictures of them. Multi splined thing with a 17mm socket head.

Seems like I’ll have to pop to a stealers to get it ID and then buy one from them as I don’t know the code

Very frustrating as I was all ready to fix the bits I need to for mot and the sun had come out.

have to say, bmw in stoke were great. the guy laughed when i joked about going outside with a box of them to try and looked it up on the system.

£11 later and it will arrive tomorrow. much easier than i expected.

the new M5 looks nice but sady i dont have that much cash

are they actually any different? i've had quite a few bmws from the early 2000s era, and all the locking wheel nuts look the same. Indeed the first thing i did when i acquired a new track car was to swap the locking wheel nuts for standard ones, way more hassle than they are worth considering i used to swap the wheels over for every track day.

i have a box of them in my garage somewhere.

Yes they are different.

The number in BMW's case (on our generation of locking wheel nuts, as the newer ones have a star-patterned keyway) usually refers to the number of splines on the nut/key...

These days people stealing wheels are a thing of the past, the earlier type of locking nut are a pain to remove if they have been over tightened. This post has reminded me I need to ditch mine and replace them with std wheel nuts.

oh well just as well i was removing them as soon as i got them, if i thought they were all the same! anyways, as maxman says, who is going to steal a 10-15 year old alloy wheel these days? some of the wheels that locking wheel nuts are supposed to protect you couldnt even give away these days!

fair point i guess, but tbh i would imagine most people take their wheels off so infrequently they don't care or think about it. I would guess for some its only the time they need a tyre

true, but leaving the locker on is risky when you do get a tyre changed... spanner monkeys love to overtighten nuts, and then when you need to take it off, the locking wheel nut shears off and then you're really screwed! best to bin them all off now while you can, lest this happen...
