Locked out!

Came to unlock my G29 today, it won’t let me in, there is a soft click, interior lights come on, but the doors remain locked.

I had it out on the road for 30 miles or so earlier today, no probs and running superbly.

Are you still locked out of it [ref]dr_john[/ref], ?

If so, have you tried locking/unlocking from the my BMW app?

Andy you are a frickin' genius. Worked from the app no probs. :)

All seems back to normal, although I am concerned about recurrence.

I had spoken to BMW techs who suggested using the manual key (have you ever tried to find the keyhole in daylight, let alone dark), but nobody came up with your suggestion!

Cheers !

Not everyone knows there is a manual key. I have never been told by any salesperson when buying my cars and only became aware of it on this forum many years ago.

One of the techs that I spoke with during this issue said that I need a new remote key battery, and BMW would provide a replacement for £45! It’s a feckin CR2032 which cost around a quid each (Duracell) and they are a doddle to fit.

Besides that, the car is only 4 months old, just coming up to 1000 miles, I would hope the battery lasts longer than that.

Are they having a laugh or what?

They''re not know as stealers for nothing. Good you got it sorted. I dread this sort of thing with modern cars. Got us all over a barrel.

No problem, just glad you got sorted

The price for the battery is taking the piss!!!

After a few months and 1000 miles I’d be expecting them to replace FOC. I use 1 key and the battery was replaced at the first service and two years old as part of the service without any issues to that point

Don't fret mate, I can get you a 10% discount.

Never had BMW charge that much for a battery. Usually a couple of quid.

Glad you got in though.

I use one key and keep the spare set in the safe.

The unused key wasn’t far behind the every day key when I got warning #2 luckily I’d bought two button cells ( I’m sure they weren’t 2032. Cells - but if was for the 335)

Just checked and it was a 2045 cell

Did you not get a warning message to tell you of a low key battery?

No, but I don’t believe that the battery is low. Everything seems OK now after unlocking with the app. I do recall getting that message on my previous G29 when the battery was low.

I want BMW to run some sort of diagnostic check on the car, on this occasion it was in my garage so everything was easy to do. I don’t fancy it happening again when I’m miles from home. Is it reasonable to expect them to do this under warranty?

Ive always found the BMW Assist fellas very helpful whenever I’ve had a glitch on either of the cars.
They have always taken the time to explain why/because/etc

They seem to have the Diagnostic stuff with them and have access to all BMW documentation.

I would go back to your dealer and speak to the after sales manager - he doesn’t know if or when you are likely to be buying again - at the very least he should give you a couple of spare batteries!

I have the spare key, it didn’t open the car either. Only the phone app opened it. I don’t believe that the battery drains in 4 months, my previous g29 went for a couple of years before running out. All working OK now.

I’m off to the dealers in the morning to discuss things, least of all having one of their guys quoting me £45 to change a battery. I shall have choice words to say.

I agree [ref]dr_john[/ref], that’d be my issue I’d be raising, a 4 month old key and a spare, unused, key didn’t/couldn’t open the car

This is the thing, the key fob wouldn’t open the door locks, but it did switch on internal lighting in the car. Upon unlocking with the phone app, everything was back to normal. Door locks clunked open, healthy audio beep, etc. Subsequent opening/closing with the fob is OK, and no messages about battery replacement.

WTF?

I suspect something is goosed!
A trip to the dealership it would seem or if it happens again, use BMW Assist

I don’t like explaining a problem to the staff on reception- i prefer to talk to someone technical as things get lost in the translation!
