Location of the Clutch Delay Valve? (CDV)

Nosa and me will be attempting to remove our CDV's tonight, so any tips wouldn't go amiss :rofl:

We've got some instructions from various sources online, but the one thing we don't know if where the actual CDV is located on the Z4. I've got no idea if it's quite obvious when you get under the car or whether it's something we'll have to hunt for, but I'd rather know sooner than when we're under the cars scratching our heads...

Also, the location of the brake/clutch fluid reservoir too?

We're going for a straight removal of the fecking thing, not bothering with modifying the existing one or fitting a modded one. We're both well out of warranty so see no benefit in keeping it.

Any tips/help much appreciated :)

Right, having done 2 I can tell you a few things ...

Firstly - can't remember Nosa's engine but on your 3.0, the gearbox is a biatch right in the way of easy working. The 2.5 is a doddle, the 3.0 not that easy. You need a 7 mm spanner, a long one preferrably.

The brake fluid container is at the left front under the driver side window (standing in front of the car). This is VERY deceiving as the reservoir has TWO compartments, one is for the brake system, the other for the clutch.

Don't bother trying to clamp the flexible hose, just disconnect the CDV and let the fluid run out. Not that much (but does it stink when it hits the light you have under the car :oops: ). Once the CDV removed and pipes reconnected, top up the brake fluid (not that much) and bleed the system. The bleed valve is right at the CDV position.

Get one of you to press the clutch, whilst the other is opening and closing the valve. Takes 5 minutes or so, not problem. No issues with the brakes at all, so no worries there.

The reason I discovered the brake fluid reservoir is in two parts as I thought that the fluid was still high enough and was bleeding for about 15 minutes whilst air still came out. When I put the pressured air on it I found out it was actually empty (the clutch part). Once topped up, the bleeding took 5 minutes.
 
7, tiny one. The actual CDV I used a clamp on to turn it off the thread.

srhutch nicked my old CDV, so can't tell you the actual bolt size but the clamp did the job nicely (think it might have been 19 mm to hold the CDV).
 
Nosa - start with your car as your gear box is small and does not have the insulation that the 6 speed box has. In the 2.5 you have loads of space and it is really easy to do.

The 3.0 is a case of "oh, where can I get my hand in" type fit ...
 
Hmm, Some one advised me i would need 2 x 17mm spanners, as i don't have a spanner set myself and not sure what ally has may have to do a bit of scrounging around today. :cry:

Good news is i have sourced a spanner set.

just checked the part numbers, and they are the same :D

Right, we're starting with your car Nosa :lol:

I've got plenty of spanners - I managed to break my 10mm spanner through improper use (i.e. trying to bodge something) on the van, so I've got a full new set of spanners from Screwfix. I'll have 2 of most size between 6mm and 18mm I think 9apart from 10mm :oops:). I'm sure the Zechausen (sp) site mentions 17mm spanners though, not 7mm...

Cheers for all the tips. I read about the segregated reservoir online somewhere - a good safety feature as it means we've got no worries about fecksing up the brakes by leaking the clutch fluid out of the end of the hose at the CDV.
 
Stupid question time........but please bear in mind I'm new to Z4's :oops:

Why are you removing the CDV? What does it do? Are they/do they cause a problem?

Just search "clutch delay valve removal" and have a read - basically it cuts out the jerkiness you can get when changing gear, particularly between 1st and 2nd. I believe the purpose of the CDV is it's supposed to smooth out the engagement of the clutch plates, but in reality it makes for jerky progress particularly on a light throttle around town.

Oddly, the only thing that really irritates me with my new toy is the 1st to 2nd gear change.......easy to sort so it seems :D
