Little up date on V10 Z4

Don't do purring Tom, this motor will be screaming all the way there! Remapped seemingly they can run to 9200RPM on standard internals, but I'm not looking to extract every last ounce of power from it. What I'm trying to achieve is something that's extremely rare ( 2 left hookers in Germany, and 1 in Russia. mines probably the only right hand drive in the world) but very usable, because I want to do touring holidays in it.

Insane. I didn't know if you planned on having it "screaming" all the way there and back, but if you are then all the better!!!

Will certainly be a spectacle, I'm guessing once running, we might be able to spot it at the odd event here and there?

Yes there can't be many around in the world, probably not enough people with the know how to get it done, and/or pockets deep enough.

Very, very impressive.

Is that silver box mounted on the outer side of the inner wing the fuel swirl pot?

I guess there is no other option but surely it is not ideal to have a part of the fuel system and fuel lines effectively running outside the vehicle body and structure?

I agree. This is a compromise, but I've looked at all areas and struggling for space. The rear end is so short and no room to mount anything safely without encroaching both back boxes. I won't mount it in boot as everything I've built similar smells of fuel inside. I'm installing a fire extinguisher system as I want to be safe when driving it.

OK, I assumed as much and I guess you have considered all other options.

I had a bit of a shunt last year so look at such things a little differently now. I would not have given it a second thought before. :?

In any case, having that monster in a Z4 will be pretty amazing.

I'll check how much clearance there is and probably make a 6mm panel that will cover it over.

We aim to please, just struggled to put the hours in through the summer. What has motivated me is our road trip I did with my sons and friends from June 2nd to the 12th. We covered 10 countries, 16 alpine passes in 10 days and was seriously hooked, so much so we were planning next year's event 2/3rd's thru our hols.
Next year the Z4 will be my mode of transport expensive or not it will be there. Can't wait to hear it going thru the numerous tunnels we encountered this year. ( around 150 in total) Roll on next summer.

Brilliant stuff! I've been reading through all the posts, both on this and the other thread over the weekend, what a fantastic project. I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing this one up and running. :)

Driving the Alps is great isn't it? By way of thanks for sharing the project with us here's one of the videos we shot on our 2013 European roadtrip in the MX5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3wpH9KQ9MU

You can find more here including some from this years trip to France & the Pyrenees then back to Vercors and Verdon in the Rhone Alps

Looking at all your road trips I'm a novice, but I will be doing lots more as it was a fantastic experience. I had so much fun driving our wee MX5 all over Europe, had to be sensible as its a real handful at times.A06CDA8A-ED2F-454E-B02C-589AB19E3448_zpsqy9kybwv.jpg

That's a very tidy Mk2 - handful or not :) Some of the drops off those Alps look kinda fatal though don't they? Can't say I blame you for taking things easy. That's a beltin' photo by the way

Yeh some of the drops off were pretty spectacular and once over you ain't coming back :o The wee MX5 runs turbo power all 380bhp and 330 ft/lbs. I put it together for my boys to have a bit of fun on circuit, only problem I let it run away with me.

What kind of steering rack is that? Did you make that to the specific length? Was the stock steering rack too big?

And what kind of ecu are you going to use?
The rack is a bit of old school MK2 Escort 2.2 quick rack, new of course. The standard rack just doesn't work as it's too bulky, even tho it isn't hydraulic. The column is bits of group4, escort, sierra oh and a little bit of BM. The ECU is from Specialist Components a Typhoo2 standalone with engine harness adapted to suit. It controls all the bmw hardware ie vanos, fly by wire, all coils, all injectors, scavenge pumps and does away with the maf sensors. It comes already mapped but tweaking it to suit your install can produce around 560/580bhp.

So that steering rack is about the right lengt? or can you adjust the lenght so that the steering rods are the same lenght as the original ones.
If that lenght is off you get toe in or toe out when cornering or otherwise moving the suspension (bumps/braking).

Interesting ECU. Does that company have a lot of experience with bmw engines?
Are you going to run MAF or alpha-n?

The rack is very similar in length just all the wrong threads. I'm having to manufacture custom track rod ends with rose joints and drop them down from the hub as the new rack sits a lot lower. This is because of the massive sump on the V10.
The ECU runs alpha-n, YouTube Specialist components v10 engine and enjoy.
