Liquid shoe polish on my seats?

Need some advice pls. I have read a couple of threads here, about using black liquid shoe polish to restore scratches. My seats could do with some restoring.
I am concerned as they do not appear to be black. More a very dark grey? Would it still be OK to use the black?

My cars a silver SE with the original interior.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

Lash out a whole £17 and get the correct colour restoring 'paint' from Furniture Clinic. Can't beat it.

Hi mate,

I've just ordered 250ml of this. Thanks for the pointer. Do you know if it will be OK to use on the steering wheel?

Ditto what Enuff Zed advised. I bought bought same sort of thing called Leather Assist off ebay a couple of years ago. Rubbed it in on the driver's bolster, buffed it up and it's still good two years on.
So better than shoe polish I would think but comes in a much smaller tin.
Which is easier to lose, as I've just found out. :(

Did you use it on your steering wheel?

No I didn't. I was just concerned with improving the look of the seat at the time. No reason I can think of why you couldn't use it on the steering wheel, but I suppose it would wear off quicker than on the seating.
Just checked my seat bolster and it probably could do with another treatment now.
If I can find the tin!

Sorry, I missed your question re the steering wheel. Can't advise I'm afraid as I cheated and fitted a Mewant cover instead. :D
But the Furniture Clinic stuff does seem pretty resilient and it soaks in well, so no reason I can see why it wouldn't work.
It won't make it slippery or anything so you may as well give it a go.

No worries at all and thanks for the advice

For the steering wheel I have one that's been refurbished by royals. Not cheap but it's miles better than stock.

Thanks Sonny. Think I'll try this option first

It's well worth the upgrade. The steering wheel is the only part of the car you physically hold with your hands all the time. It's well worth spending £200 on. The feel of their upgraded steering wheels after a refurb is worth it.

I know others have went for cheap leather and it may look nice but the feeling isn't the same.

It's the same reason why people spend £800+ on decent seats. I find the stock seats fine personally. But I can see why they pay so much as you will be spending all your time planted in one whilst in the car.

Shoe polish will just rub off onto your hands so the furniture clinic stuff is a lot better. Personally I'd use a magic eraser to clean one up and then some leather cleaner and conditioner unless it's really bad then I would get it properly refurbished.

You can skimp on certain areas in a car but you ideally want the seat and steering wheels to be as nice as possible.

A previous owner had the steering wheel re done by Royals, it looks and feels very upmarket. He also had the gear knob and hand brake done by them. Makes the car feel worth more.

Royals are the ultimate, but if you are on a budget and are patient and fairly good with your hands then you can fit a Mewant cover for £34 plus a couple of hours of your time. It's a satisfying job to do, doesn't look cheap or tacky at all and if it only lasts a few years you can do it again and still be quids in versus the full Royals monty.

Thanks all!

Mine is not so bad tbf. Its just starting to look a little faded around the plastic trim. A faint line going across like 2mm thickness. The shine has gone away so I think the FC stuff should take care of it :D

Many would want the sw not to be shiny. I’ve found Meguiars ”leather and vinyl cleaner” restore the matt look quite well - I guess it mostly just removes grease that inevitably is tranfered from hands :?. If the faint line is like exit schratches from jeans rivets, then the fc repair stuff might help.

So I just got done with my seats. They look great on the whole. BUT I can see a couple of uneven patches.
I will go over those sections again tomorrow. If I am brave enough, I will give the steering wheel a go too! But thank you all for the advice

Does the FC stuff come in one shade of black? Mine are the E85 2004 M seats and they seem to be blacker than the standard ones.

Ooh, dunno, I just ordered black I think?
Pretty sure they do shades of other colours so worth calling and asking them.
