Lightweight Wheel Options

Hey everyone!

I am looking at a couple of options of lightweight wheels (mainly for track use as they'll be wrapped in semi slicks).

The two options I am considering:

  • OEM style 32 (including a wheel refurb)

  • Protrack One from CP Performance

On the one hand the style 32s will come out slightly cheaper (not as much as you might believe), but I love the Protrack Ones. Anyone had experience of both and can weigh in?

Also if anyone has any other suggestions for good, lightweight, reasonably cheap track wheels that would be fantastic.

I'd go for the 32's personally. Means getting hold of a spare will be easier if/when you need one.
Only thing is the offsets could be better!

Style 32s are quite hard to get hold of in the right size. MV1s (style 72) are readily available, cheap and light. I don’t know how they stack up but they are 1kg lighter than 108s when I weighed them side by side.

Is a kg really going to make any difference in the real world? Even if it's per wheel that's still only 4kg. Unless you are planning on stripping the car down to basics it's not going to make a noticeable difference. if we were talking about a caterham or a ferrari it's a different matter but not a 1300kg car with a 200bhp engine

Thanks for the replies all :)

In terms of the style 32s, the ones I would go for are the E46 18" fitment (18x8J ET47, 18x8.5J ET50). The main downside is these give no improvement over stock (MV2s) for increasing tyre width.

Style 72s are only 1kg lighter at the front (they're about the same weight as MV2s at the rear).

For the weight aspect, the E46 style 32s are 2.4kg lighter per wheel at the front and 2.6kg lighter per wheel at the rear. The Protrack Ones are 2.7kg lighter per wheel at the front and rear.

You have to remember that a total of ~11kg of unsprung weight makes a much bigger difference than 11kg of sprung weight.

Worth a look at Apex Wheels lots of style and size options and very light. I'm wanting a set of 18" ARC-8 once funds allow 8)

Team dynamics pro race 1.2s are usually the go to for track wheels. Come in various widths / sizes

Protracks are great, and have a lot of rave reviews from the track day community.

I've personally ordered a set of Motec Nitros, which come out slightly cheaper than the Protracks in the equivalent wheel specs, but they are slightly heavier.

Only issue I've found with the Motecs is that you can't get them in the UK unless you buy from an importer (like LKPerformance), but the wait time is substantial if they're not in stock. I ordered them in April, and they're not due to be delivered to me until next month.

I'd love a set of the Apex SM-10, but they (along with the ARC-8) are a bit out of my budget I'm afraid.

The Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2s are a contender actually. They have quite aggressive offsets on the 9J from what I remember when looking previosly.

I'd never heard of Motec before, but I am interested. I'll give the guys at LKPerformance a bell to see what they can do.

405M (genuine) - forged, O.E.

Move to a square set up for more neutral handing and save a ton of unsprung weight… well, 25KG compared to 108’s with staggered tires…

Look like this with a 10mm spacer on the rear;

They're very popular with people at the Ring as they're TUV approved like the Protracks.
