Two questions from a new 2015 Z4 owner. 1. Should the dipped beams be on (switch at 2 oclock) with the ignition on but engine not running? 2. I assumed that as I had iDrive I had High beam assist, but this doesn't seem to be the case - I don't think i've got it! Was this an option?

Having iDrive does not mean you have high beam assist. It was indeed an option. You can check what options were fitted to you car by putting the last 7 digits of your ViN in a decoder like this one:

https://www.mdecoder.com

With high beam assist, you just (when the lights are on), flick the high beam stalk forward, and a icon will appear on the dash to say its active, it was an optional extra, nothing to do with idrive

OK high beam ass cleared up, but what about the other question on dipped beams. Do they operate (if switch in correct position) without the engine running but ignition on?

Just been out to check (as I leave mine on auto)
Yes

Mines 2012 plate as per signature. Even got the lights on alarm on the dash when I opened the door to check they were on. (In daylight :D)

Thanks for this - found out I have HBA -💡🔦💡only activates though when the lights are switched to auto and not when set to manual. My dipped lights work too without engine running

I can select home lights in iDrive, if i flick the lights lever forward, with ignition off, the dipped beams stay on for about 30 seconds.
I also note that from 2012ish the light switch has only 3 positions, my 2009 has 4.

My 2013 20i has a 4 position light switch :?
1, lights off
2, side lights
3, head lights
4, auto lights

My 2009 23i has a 4 position light, but my colleagues 2012 23i only had a 3 position switch.
I think the halos are permanently on.
