Lighting or not?

I thought that the Auto selection on lights meant that when it got dark (or lighting dropped) then the headlights automatically came on. I discovered in fog today that the headlights didn't come on unless I pressed the dip button. How stupid that in dense fog on auto that the dipped beam doesn't come on automatically.

My last three BMWs have all suffered from the same problem. It seems that the sensors in the lights don't detect fog
 
The sensor may not be able to reliably detect fog conditions. Also, it is reasonably to assume that if it’s heavy fog, driver will need to turn on fog light manually, in which case the headlights will be turned on automatically with the fog light. Thus, by balancing the unreliable fog condition detection and the reasonable assumption, the system is designed to rely on the assumption instead of unreliable detection.
 
I actually just red something about this in the manual recently. So yes, it sounds like the sensor does not detect fog and you should in this case force dipepd beams ON or use the fog lights.

The problem is that fog can actually be quite bright and won't trigger the dusk sensor. I don't think any night sensor would trigger in heavy during the day as the light still gets through.
 
Fog and auto lights don't mix. Luckily thanks to DRLs I haven't had a head-on in the last 15 years. Touch and go on the rear ramming.
Same as auto-wipers and rain (or any kind of precipitation) don't seem to be the best of bed fellows either.
Don't get me started on auto high beam; it's just shite.

I think the thing is that some of us old fogeys pride ourselves with keeping up with technology and utilising the latest and greatest app that is normally the preserve of under 21's. But it is so frustrating that when you have an auto light switch there is no mention that 1. It doesn't work in low visibility, fog is very low light as well. 2. Holly (my on board computer) didn't know that!
At least there is a light on the dash to tell you that the dip is on.
 
It’s not limited to BMW, our old Zafira and the wife’s Ford Focus doesn’t either. Quite dangerous if you get used to them lighting on their own all the time. :thumbsdown:
 
Auto high beam sucks in fog as it kicks in and is terrible.
I do like high beam assist the rest of the time.

Impress the fog lights in fog conditions and that overrides auto lights anyway.
