Lighter than a Z3??

I presumed that a Z4 would be a far bit heavier than an equivalent Z3, so I started to look into how much by as I've got both sat in the garage currently.
But I was surprised to find this data for both the cars from the same source. I've read that BMW tried to save weight in the Z4 but is this right??

Taken from Parkers-

BMW Z3 Roadster 2.8 2d – Facts and Figures
01 Apr 1997 - 01 Jun 2000
Length
4025 mm
Width
1858 mm
Height
1293 mm
Weight
1360 kg

BMW Z4 Roadster 3.0i 2d – Facts and Figures

19 Jun 2003 - 01 Oct 2003
Length
4091 mm

1781 mm

That weight looks suspiciously like the 2.0 figure, I'm sure I've seen the 3.0 z4 as around the same as the z3 in the mid 1300's?

From Wikipedia so it must be true!.....

Yeah i thought it was around 1360kg's. Definitely not under 1300 as it performs about the same as a new focus st which has more power but weighs more.

They show the 2.0 as even less-

Model
2.0i 2d (05)
4091 mm
1781 mm
1299 mm
1220 kg

2.0i 2d (06)
4091 mm
1781 mm
1299 mm
1295 kg

TBH I'm still quite impressed if it's in the same ball park as the Z3 given the extra equipment / luxuries it seems to have. I thought it would've been about 200kgs heavier just by looking at them.

Those maybe dry weights, the ones on wiki include petrol, driver and 1 piece of luggage

You could be right Sars, I know that bike manufacturers even remove engine oil & brake fluid to get the figures as low as possible!

Yes - hadn't noticed before but the 2006 factory brochure echoes that difference

I think they added more sound deadening, but that wouldn't make 30kg, nor would the engine in reality be much lighter

I wonder what makes the 3.0si 30kg heavier than the 3.0i? Thought it was a lighter engine.

The engine is lighter (at the time it was the lightest production 6 cylinder engine available) but as mentioned above it has a considerable amount of sound deadening in the doors to give a nice "clunk" the 3.0si also has bigger brakes which would add to the weight.
I've read that bmw saved a lot of weight (around 20kg) just from the exhaust manifolds but this is obviously outweighed by the weight gained elsewhere.
Regards.

20kg from exhaust manifolds!! That can't be right surely??

Maybe the whole engine?
