Life Long Gearbox Oil

I booked in for a 30k inspection 1 today at my local BMW. I also question the gearbox oil to which they replied its life long, is this right? :o

How many of you have changed this on your facelift spec and what were your reasons for doing so? Should it be done?

Thanks

Mark

What year & model Z do you have? E85M requires gearbox fluid changes per the inspection menu...other I dunno. Probably "filled for life".

Yeah long life filled for life... A shorter life than if you changed the oil that is ;)

Yea that's what I'm thinking, although at 30k I guess I'm ok at the moment.

I questioned this also. I think the definition of life long is 10 years or 100k. That's not from BMW just from reading elsewhere. You should be ok

I have the oil just need to pull my finger out! 67k on mine over 10 years old.

Mine too MM.
We should do a forum oil change day ! I think I would struggle to do mine with my knowledge. How about the rear axle oil as well ?

Not a bad idea just need somewhere with a lift. I have not done it so can't say how hard it is. The diff oil I have done I can see that being a problem for anyone. Big hex key needed can't remember exactly but about 20mm.

why the f#ck would anyone not change their gbox oil ? we all know oil deteriorates with use and age , god knows how much a new gearbox from the stealers would cost, why risk it ? amsoil or royal purple is highly thought of and may help with shift issuetoo. less than 30 quid and an easy diy 45 min job for a novice.the m is specified for change at inspection two, i did mine before that along with dif and again at ins 2. also 5k interim engine oil changes which i do for peace of mind and enjoyment, doesnt affect service history but document them seperately for new owner when i sell the car. did the same on my z3mr and whoever comes to view can see the car has bee well cherished and is more happy to pay the asking price. bin there proved it !

Sounds good, I used to change gear oil on my Type Rs every 30k, but that wasn't long life. Seeing as it's not covered on Inspection I will just change it myself when the time comes, maybe do it at 50k or next 2 years etc.
