So, this is now planned & budged for next year, however... what’s the wisdom afterwards on

1) running in (a) none (b) 500 miles (c) gradual rpm increase throughout 1500 miles? (Am considering option (c))

2) further oil change 1200-1500 miles after shell change? (Am considering necessary)

What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Ah ha... answered my question here https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=95781

 at the thread title. I thought this was going to be some kind of existential crisis.

I was advised my my Indy (Phil at CPC) that no need to change the oil again as it's not a running in service or full rebuild, just keep it under 4k for the first 500 and about 6k for the next 500 and you're good to go.

Why would you not change the oil after 1500 miles
It’s only £100
Because it's not needed a very well known specialist said change the oil at half interval ie 5k instead of 10k

I had mine done by Forza in Chepstow at the beginning of the year.

Was instructed to keep the revs under 3K ish for the first 500 miles, not to labour the engine in a high gear at low rpm or drive at a continuous rpm for hundreds of miles. Increased to 6K for the next 500 miles then good to go.

I was told there is no need to change the oil but I did it myself anyway because it gave me peace of mind and makes sense for the relatively small outlay of £80 even for Millers CFS NT+. The oil that came out was perfect and the filter when cut open was clean.

IIRC Phil gave me similar advice re rpm and also not to labour the engine after he changed my shells. I changed the oil and filter after about 1000 miles and found nothing to suggest rapid running in wear had taken place, although I didn’t dismantle the filter.

Since my Zed sees so many track miles, Phil reset my service interval indicator so that the service alert goes off at twice the normal frequency. When the alert goes off early, I make only additional oil and filter services. I also make an oil change after every two or three track days regardless of the schedule and I’ve had the cams and followers re-shimmed a few times outside of the usual schedule. I stick to the standard schedule for a full Inspection I and II.

There is no “bedding in” of new shells. Advice to keep the revs low would be more to prevent worse damage should something fail (or be re-assembled incorrectly).

My E46 M3 destroyed a crank many years ago after the wrong bearing clearances were used.

Thanks for all the feedback, and, as always lots of varied advice.

I think, for peace of mind I’ll take it easy for the first 500-700 miles, do an oil change at around another 1k then at least I’ll know I’ve done a full belt & braces.
