Lidl battery charger

Hi, anyone got one of the battery chargers from lidl? On the instruction manual it says the battery should be disconnected before charging. Just wondering if the battery can be charged up while still connected to the car. I have a CTEC that I use for the Z4 and a motorcycle and swap them over once every 2 week but would be good just to leave the CTEC connected to the bike all the time.

Simple answer would seem to be. Buy another CTEC charger.

Edit>- Just spotted you're a Yorkshire man.

Ha ha, yes I am so can’t go wasting that amount of money on a CTEC. Hence why a bought the Lidl variant. I think it should be ok. I may try it out on my van and see what happens (it’s under warranty)…..

You don’t say which Z4 model series you have…

On E89s the Lidls are a ok for permanent connection to the positive terminal in the engine bay NOT the battery in the boot.

The one negative of most Lidl (and most other models apart from CTEKs, if they are an exception) is that in the even of a mains power failure they do not restart automatically.. :tumbleweed:

I have two different Lidl ones plus other more expensive variants and they work absolutely fine…

Just set it to AGM on the buttons..

I bought a Lidl one and plan to use it on my E86 this winter.

It has an AGM battery and I was intending to use the terminals under the bonnet - I suppose time will tell!

The E89 (and later cars) had an IBS..Intelligent Battery Sensor that works with the DME to work out when to charge the battery and by how much..

Depending on how you connect the charger to the battery and the many cables around it you may cause issues with the IBS and hence the charging circuits..

Hence why Lidl states ‘remove battery from car ‘ type instructions…this removes this kind of inadvertent operator induced issue.

So on later BMWs the red plastic cased +ve point in the engine bay is the way to go…

Faffing around the battery area also involves risks in damaging the IBS physically which is quite delicate plus maybe upsetting the notorious rear EPB ECU..

Apart from those reasons it’s fine..

I bought one couple of years ago, didn't work so returned.
If you do buy....keep the receipt.
BMW recommend using the points under the bonnet for charging.
I assume that way doesn't upset the charge monitoring.

So today I fitted the lidl battery charger to the terminals under the bonnet. Few photos where I fitted clamps even though I’m sure you all know.5C98E8A6-052C-415E-8913-EAA9D0C155E6.jpeg1B6D4A50-17EA-4AF5-908E-ADC49D667B16.jpegF9013472-0E9D-4342-9703-342048BCEC7F.jpeg7B63912C-B024-40F5-9316-A77244593CED.jpegB5C0B90D-5A1D-4BCB-8778-4B8F3302BCC9.jpeg2E0C75B0-8B14-4C97-BBE3-B332AF743951.jpeg5B708537-2162-4827-95FF-22135C8E4F84.jpeg
