Just recieved this Oris big crown pointer in bronze, it was purchased in August this year. I suspect the original owner didn't get on with the patina that has started to change the colour. I really like it as is but I will at some point restore it to OG bronze and enjoy observing the process again.

My Fenix 6 pro got an armband upgrade ( TiMOVO Bracelet - 25 EUR), for now, it is very good for that price (Garmin titanium armband is almost 200 EUR).

I think this will be my first foray into watch ownership at this level … I’m 99% sure I’m going for this - does anyone have any insight into reliability, longevity etc please??

Thanks.

All I'd say is don't buy new. You could get an immaculate used one for £2500

For the same money (£4200 retail) I'd be looking at a used Omega Speedmaster instead

I wouldn’t pay that for a Tag I’m afraid, for similar money I would personally prefer this

As previously mentioned don’t dismiss pre owned.

Thanks. I wasn’t necessarily saying that actual (new) watch just the model. I am indeed looking at a good used watch. Omegas look good to me but I guess I’m a bit fussy so not all of them look right to me. I’m still looking though :)

Tudor looks good - thanks for all the pointers 👍

Its a quandary of endless choice when it comes to watches & very much down to personal choice.
Whether used or new its worth getting hold of any actual watch that does interest you to see & feel what you are spending your hard earned cash on . They all look great under the camera but build quality varies massively .
I was a massive Oris fan but had issues with strap on a Aquis ( twice sorted free under waranty ) & with the crown on a BC4 ( unfortunately a month out of warranty ) so wouldn't buy the brand again.
Worth noting that automatic chronos are costly to service / repair , budget from £400 upwards so buying used can soon become a false economy. If you are planning the purchase as a "forever" watch then my best advice would be fix your budget then buy the best you can afford new with full. cover EG the recent Ball watch i bought came with 5yr warranty .
If you arent set on buying one of the big 3 names (Tag , Breitling , Omega) then worth a look at Baume Mercier if you get chance ,
really impressive build quality for the spend ,

same with Ball engineer https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/collections/ball-watch-company-watches/products/ball-watch-company-roadmaster-rescue-chronograph-limited-edition-dc3030c-s1-wh

Some good advice there thanks. I really would like to handle the watch before purchase and noted a few watch places local to me to go have a look.

Also, I can’t say I will be buying many as for me this is a big investment so it really needs to last …

Casio 'Marlin' Duro on a Bond style NATO. Love this watch, 50 quid for a 200mm diver. Served me well on a recent trip to the Caribbean with a traditional silicon divers strap.

I rather like that - very smart!

Nice choice, I've got the auto with the valjoux 7750 movement which I've had a few years and keeps good time.

Straton used to ship their watches from Switzerland and now for some reason they've started to ship them I think from Singapore so my last watch from them I was stung with 70 quid import duty which has put me off ordering again.

Hi Tim I did order the auto to start with as the 7750 movement is very robust and it’s easily serviced, but it can be a tad noisy. In the end I went for the Quartz just for the ease of grab and go. Have to admit I do like the look of the auto more so.

Hi Paul,

Yes I think I was a little betwixed at the time which to go for, I think I only went for the Auto as I placed the order when it was the original crowdfunding price. I'm not sure nd you see many Valjoux movements in a microbrand either. My only slight concern is the crown action is very gritty in feel although working OK.

Tim.

New strap time for the Monaco, I dread changing straps on this watch, one slip of the spring bar tool is never far away 😱 so gone for a quick release milanese from WatchGecko, really nicely made strap and a breeze to fit. Let's hope it's not too eager to quick release 😬

For a bit of fun ordered this homage from AliExpress and quite impressed with the quality and finish considering what it cost. The seller sent me 2 in error so contacted them and they said don't worry about it.

It appears to have a mechaquartz movement as the chrono is mechanical with a flyback so not bad for what it cost.
