If I had £100 to spend on a watch then id buy a Citizen or Seiko rather than a replica Omega or Rolex.
Like you say, they tell the time the same.
Or is it the fact that you want 99% of the population to think you've spent £3k on a real one?

A watch fan will buy a watch because he likes the way it looks not because of what other people will think. Now lets say that a particular watch is way out his budget but yet one of the top factories (I use that term like loosely) making fakes/reps, produce said watch at 95% of looks and feel for a fraction of the cost? Why not go for it?
99% of the population haven't got a clue what an Audemars Piguet or Panerai is, and if you're wearing a Rolex most people will assume it's fake anyway.
So who are you trying to impress by spending £££ on a watch?

I don't need to impress anyone
Your post made me think about servicing my Seamaster Pro, so I took it into Goldsmiths to get an estimate this afternoon. Maybe that was fortunate as it turns out that it's just under 20 years old so they have quoted me £370.00 for a full service and polish plus £50.00 to fit a brand new bezel surround (the blue bit) whereas if it was over 20 years old the cost would be about another £100.00 to £120.00. So, come late Jan or early Feb I should get back a fully refurbished/serviced watch which will be good to go for another few years!Angie4m said:DLH said:You're right! They have been well used, over many years. The Seamaster Pro has travelled over 500,000 sea miles, worn during a cricket match at the North Pole and also worn whilst swimming across the equator on more than one occasion! Still runs well though, as do the others. :wink:Angie4m said:But back on topic.....still some interesting pieces being put up. Those omegas could tell a story given the beating they've taken over the years.
(I believe that watches are meant to be worn, not kept in a box, and cars are meant to be driven, not kept in a garage!)
Wow! Some great memories right there but yes they are supposed to be worn and that's why Mikes always look like he's been through the mill with them by the time they come to be serviced. Actually he didn't want his sub being returned to 'new' when it went for a service but the jewellers decided it needed it. He wasn't too happy at the start but it's an excuse to batter it up again. There are some he's a bit more careful with but they all have 'battle scars'. You can tell when he's doing work on the car if there is access issues as the watch comes off and sits on top of the struts and then usually it's my job to get my hand in after all that.

After all if you like the look there are plenty of well made quality homage watches, a Steinhart Ocean 1 is great case in point, if you cannot afford a Sub then buy the Steinhart. No one will ever convince me otherwise.
Depends on what you're going to do with your watch. If it's just for wearing around town, down the pub etc, then a replica will be OK. However, if like me you want to use the watch and go down below 500ft regularly (in the past), swim in the world's oceans, take it to the North Pole etc, then you WILL find that a replica is not up to the job! My Omega Seamaster Pro has done all those things for nigh on 20 years and is still going strong and has been well worth the money that I paid for it in 1996. Horses for courses I guess - if it's for "looks" then a rep will suffice whereas if it's to do a job that it is intended for and is to last a very long time then there's no substitute for the real deal!zagamuffin said:Hilly30si said:The only reason anybody buys a fake watch because thats what a replica is, would be to pretend something its not. I call them reps because it's not fake, it's is actually a watch and does tell the time lol
So I can afford to buy an omega planet ocean but I don't think they are worth @8000 euro so I buy a replica (fake) .
If I buy the real one I'm a Rich prick showing off and if I buy the rep I'm a chav wanabee
Can't win but I don't judge anyone who decides differently to me
Enjoying the mature debate btw
