let off speeding?

Back in 1996 was only 22 with a Mk3 Cavalier SRi, so didnt stick out to much  .

I was having a barny with the missus one lunchtime and failed to see the marked police car as I overtook on a dual carriage way, I was doing 70+ in a 40mph zone.

As I realised I took my foot off the gas but didnt brake, he didnt pull me over until we had been over a roundabout where he said I didnt indicate (I know I did)

his first words were "Do you need to wear glasses or do we need bigger stripes", proceeded to give me a lecture then let me go.

He suggested taking her out for a meal as it would be cheaper than £40 fine and points, he did point out that had he been a traffic cop I would have been for it but I dont really think he could believe what had just happened.

what- had they seen u doing taht speed?
It was 3.20 am on a dry moonlit empty motorway and they had zapped me from a bridge and then gave chase. I was on my way to Wiltshire for a school re union later that day

not going to admit to the speed but was close to 3 figures and got let off. Trick is to make sure someone else is going faster and to drive fast but safely - keep your distance, make sure weather conditions are good etc.

157...fook me.

Never been stopped but had the pointy finger waved at me a few times. Last year I narrowly escaped, they either had bigger fish to fry elsewhere or decided to go after the car I was following. When I saw flashing blue lights in the rear view mirror and the car pull up close behind me and then beside me I thought I was going to get a ticket but once I acknowledged them (and received the naughty finger) they sped off with lights still flashing.
Good ladies and chaps really (I`ll say otherwise when one day I get a ticket).
Thought I was captured about a week ago by camera in back of white van but as of yet haven`t received anything in the post.

BTW, I`m a very sensible driver, I don`t encourage speeding on public roads. We all occassionally step over the lawful limit though I`m sure, even if by accident.

I got stopped by a state police patrol who was coming towards me just after I had passed four other cars on a two lane highway. He did a quick u-turn and came up behind me and pulled me over. When he walked up to my car he said he had me clocked at 78mph and 65mph on his two(!) radar units. I just kind of smiled inside as I realized he had nothing that would stand up in court. The question would have to be asked which radar unit was correct and was it possible that neither one was? I was given a warning and went on my way.

Its all about passing the attitude test most of the time. Treat a copper like a human and show a bit of remorse and you might be ok. Treat them like a k*ob head and expect the same back and 3 points on the license.
Sadly today, coppers are reduced to Policing figures and not people and are slowly having their powers of disgression eroded away. A lot of time a copper will get critisized by his or her boss for not taking action against people in certain circumstances, so they are stuck at the end of the day. Hitting objectives for certain offences is wrong, but thats what the government care about, and it gets passed down the line until you get stopped and points added.

Anyway, rant over. Any let off is a good result!

That's an absolute classic!

Very much depends where and when you get caught. Quite a few years ago I was ticketed (camera van in a laybay) for 81mph on a 70mph dual-carriageway, thought that was quite harsh as it was 10.00am on a Sunday morning, dry, warm and sunny, no junctions for miles around and the road was quiet.

What a lot of folk don't take into consideration is the inaccuracies in their speedo's though: in all honesty my speedo was probably displaying close to 90mph to get ticketed for 81mph, so I suppose I was asking for it.

I'm sorry but I find it impossible to believe you were let off with 157mph if they went to the effort of stopping you, if they got a reading with the gun then your lucky you weren't dealt with for dangerous driving, let alone excess speed.

Your right about being more wary now. I am a lot more careful now after I was pulled a couple of months ago after doing excessive speeds in a 50mph zone by an undercover copper who had been filming me and i had no idea.

Now i don't put my foot down when someone is a bit close to me, i wait until i can see it's not an undercover cop

I suppose it's good in a way really, it could save us from points, fines or even bans in the future. Not that i break the law in my car though  :P

Surely Lucy you just batted your eye lips at the copper and get let off? Unless its a women, then your knackered! ha ha.

Clear night with light traffic southbound on the M1 close to London. I was on the outside lane following someone doing 80 slowing passing the center lane traffic. I then notice a motorcyclist closing in behind me and tail gated me (not even a car's lenght between me and him). The in front continued doing 80 on the outside lane and didnt pull in to the middle lane even when there were gaps in the traffic allowing him to do so.... this continued for around 3-4 minutes then I found a gap in the traffic to under take the car in front...( I floored it and under took at what must be 100+ on to the middle lane, pass the 'slow' car, then back onto the fast lane taking my foot off back to 80ish..) the motorcyclists was behind me during this at no more than 1 car's lenght whiles i did all this. after pulling back to the fastlane I checked my mirror again to find that the biker is actually tailgating me even closer now (right behind me on the driver side), at which point i decided to pull over to the middle lane to let him past....

as he was pulling past my driver's side window, I turn my head to check who is this 'aXXhole' that values his life so little (if i'd braked for anything it would have been the end of him for sure given the distance between me and him). the first thing i saw was.... yellow reflective stickers at which point i thouhgt, please let the next colour i see be green and not blue.... and of course, the next colour is BLUE!!! ( for those not in the UK, yellow/green reflective sticker patterns = paramedics, yellow/blue pattern = POLICE!!!)

within the space of a second, a million thoughts ran thru my head ( formulating a valid excuse, what speed did he clock me at, am i going to lose my license etc). fortunately, my mind laid to rest as he pulled pass he jestured with his hands to what could be interpret as slow down or thank for pulling over for me to pass. ( I am 60/40 as to he meant the latter  ). I guess he had more important things to do!!!

needless to say the rest of my journey back to london on the M1 was at the national speed limit

Unless it was the woman that was trying to chat me up in a bar on Saturday night!! I wouldn't have minded if she was good looking, infact i would have liked it! But she was one of those butch lezzers

I haven't yet been pulled in my Z (touch wood, touch wood touch wood).

I do, however, take great pleasure in cruising past radar-wielding police at 25 giving them a one-finger salute.

Me too, infact just last week i mouthed 'wankers' at some as i was going past at 25mph. I've done much worse things though that shocked them

This was a long while ago, but was stopped early hours of the morning once. 2 cops got out of an unmarked car after following for a mile or so. One the cops was a rookie and the other seasoned officer in his 50's, the rookie was all keen shall I get the breathalyser shall I shall note book out and tickets at the ready, you know the script.
The funniest bit was the older officer turned round and told the rookie shut up and get back in the car and stop causing problems. He then procceded to give me a lecture on my speed and sent me on my way with keep your speed down and go straight home and no ticket.

Made me smile all the way home :D

Been pulled over 3 times and only received a talking to on each occasion. Very lucky!

Its the aproach that makes the difference, if they calmly tell you that you know better and slowing down would be a good idea your happy. If preaching copper that thinks he's your dad and wont let you go until he makes you feel 10 years old then it winds me up.

Well I have no reason to exagerate or tell nis truths and proud of it I certainly am not,but what I said is fact and I have rarely shared it with anyone for obvious reasons. Both the coppers were quite young and seemed more intrested in my car and were sympathetic to the fact that a loss of my licence and possibly worse would ruin my buisness. I was just v v lucky
