Legal/Illegal number plates?

Yeah, but the Average Speed Cameras like the ones on parts of the M1 read the plate and time you between two cameras to see if you're speeding ... thank goodness for cruise control !

sorry sort of mixed my posts up, the CC reference was to do with the average cameras, which seem to be popping up everywhere, wont be long before they are on every motorway entry and exit

So you guys make your own "number plates" across the pond? Interesting. The only legal plates in North America are government issue.

You buy the right to use a registration mark from the DVLA. Either you pay a licensing fee with a new car, or anything from £250 to about £50,000 if you want a special one that spells your name or something. The physical plates, which are reflective acrylic, are made at pretty much any motor factor that has plate-making facilities. I know in the US the stamped plates are actually made by convicts in prisons, and the plate itself is issued to you. What happens if the plate gets broken? Do you get a new registration mark, or do they make up another identical one for you?

Unless you have personalized plates, lost, damaged or stolen plates are replaced with a different plate, and plate ID. I've never had mine personalized, but I do know that it costs a lot less than $50,000.

Well the good ones are sold at auction. 'F1' was sold recently for £330,000. Once you own the right to one, you can sell it on to someone else. The price is whatever someone will pay.

I bought T8HRA for my wife's car (her name's Tahira) for £250 direct from DVLA which I reckon was a bit of a bargain.
