LED Sidelights

Hi folks,

Today I received the first of the LED's that I have on order. I had ordered a few different combinations to try as sidelights, as I don't want any hint of blue light, and the colour temperature is not always listed on the adverts. These are the lamps received today...

I won't lie, getting these into the sidelight holes was very touch and go and needed a bit of persuasion to get them in. Trying to get the drivers side headlight rear cover back on wasn't much fun either. The dark and rain didn't help, but as a typical bloke I couldn't wait til tomorrow :)

I've used an SLR but there's a streetlamp right outside my house, so I've desaturated red light slightly in Photoshop and also increased the exposure amount a little to make it clearer. Only the sidelights are switched on.

Left side is OEM filament bulb, right side LED as above...

Here is the same shot with varying exposure amounts, I haven't fiddled with red light saturation this time. You can clearly see the colour difference, and how much more evenly distributed the light is...

Overall, the colour closely matches the xenon headlights and I'm very happy with the results. Now it just remains to be seen how long these things last, with that amount of chip LED's per unit they probably get quite toasty! Not bad for 6 quid though.

Thanks guys, hope this helps I'll continue to photograph my mods and post them here!

Gareth.

That looks very nice - definitely doing this. Are you going to change the main bulbs to match ? Not sure if LEDs get toasty though... So they might last. Good job

Hi there mate, cheers for that. Not sure if it's worth changing the full beams to LED, and I don't know if they would have enough output to do the job properly. I will do some research!

Nah, wouldn't go LED - don't think you could - just mean brighter bulbs, like Osram Nightbreakers... Supposed to be a bit better than standard.

I'll check those out tomorrow, saved me a bit of googling there cheers!

I Put leds in too, match the xenons nicely. For the high beams I ebay searched 6000K and 7000K H7 Bulbs, and there is a lot of options (they are still halogen, but make a nicer colour). Most of them look like a blue bulb but as soon as they light up the blue colour disappears and makes a nice white that matches the xenons.

I now have angel eyes (7000K CCFL tubes), Xenons and those H7 High Beams all exactly the same colour 8)

Now im just wondering if I should do the same for the fogs... even tho I've never needed to use them

Did my sidelights a few weeks ago PITA what a faff, messing around with coins in panels, sliding wire out of the way, removing rear cap, before you can even work your hand through masses of wire to get to the rear of the bulb holder :x

"no pain, no gain" though Andy :D

Looks good

Echo Bings comment - Osram Nightbreaker plus. They are a good bulb to slot into the mainbeam.I've just converted my XF to OEM xenon and they match the white colour very well.

Avoid the blue variant unless you want to be mistaken for a Corsa...

You are right mate

Did mine yesterday. I agree, a pita, but worth it. The stiff wire that secures the cover came off on the first one, thought I was in for a mare refitting but get a torch in there and its a quick job. The 2nd one was done in 2mins flat.
