Leather wear

Noticed pretty bad marking on my leather seats at the weekend.

Car is just over 3 months old. Am I right in being concerned here?

Obviously its where I get in and out of the car, but to be honest, the car hasn't been used that much and I'm not happy with the wear - what will it look like in 3 years???

Hi Senwar

I have noticed the leather isnt great on my driving seat either, particularly on the side bolster, obviously from getting in and out of the car.

The leather seems softer than what I had on the M3, same concerns as you, wonder what it will be like after a few years.

I might give it some liquid leather treatment and see how it fairs.

Oh and good to see you got the CSL's on, looks the business! :D

I think with the seats being red its more noticeable (I remember being a bit disappointed with my previous Z seats but they were black so not as much of an issue). Might give it the treatment you mention.

And cheers re: the wheels - had to be done didn't it!!

Are you wearing black belts by the way?

I have the red seats as well - and get in the car as if I wear nappies ... 8)

I've been worried about this, and try my best not to slide against the bolsters when getting in and out of the car. I think someone else posted on the old z4um about their bolsters suffering premature wear. Definately a weak point, and one to watch out for. I think whoever it was did try complaining to BMW, but without much luck... :(

No black belts, just jeans (which it could be from that. To be honest, I've always thought I take care, but obviously not.

:(

Not a good sign that is it.

Swissvax (formarly swissol) do a leather dye matched to the colour... never used it though, so don't know how well it works.

Are you sure it's wear and not just dirt? Try cleaning it with leather cleaner and see if it comes out.

Hmm looks like dye from the jeans rather than wear, I would clean it too.

Liquid leather does seem to help a little, but being so soft it does seem to be very wear prone at that point. Like you guys i worry about what the seats will look like when they get a few years old.

You sure thats a pic of the seat Senwar? looks a bit phallic to me!! 8)

That's because you're ghey.

I actually had someone at work ask what I was looking at when the pic was up, wasnt down to my imagination.

Was a female as well, not a ghey colleague !! :P

Mine are wearing quite well and the car has covered 10k miles now. That said its about the only thing that hasn't gone wrong! Rattles, creaks and other build quality issues still appear on a weekly basis and are badly tainting my opinion of the car! :(

With regards to the leather I do treat it once a month which prevents it drying out, and adds some UV protection at the same time, not that we have had much sun of late! :o

Senwar I would suggest using some BMW leather cleaner and then some Auto Glym leather cream, that will bring it up as good as new.

Pete, you didn't seem to have these issues before you started tracking the car.....do you suppose it could be the extra stress of tracking it???
curtis tracks his and says it sounds like a bucket of bolts :?

sorry for the hijack :hijacked:

Ahoy there shipmate! :D

A valid point, but track work is a lot smoother than driving some of the roads here in the UK! I should get the car back tomorrow, after fixing the passenger door membrane & some more dash rattles. I am off to Switzerland on Saturday for a week of driving with the 'lads' so I am sure my love for the car will return 8)

Cheers,

Pete.

I hope for you Pete that the weather improves, as it is dire over there as well. :x

This leather wear that you speak of. Well, its been around since the beginning of the Z4 existence. On a few cars, one that I know of for sure, it has worn completely thru and now you see metal. I know, ugh, but he is going to get it taken care of right after his honeymoon. Cost will be $1300 for both seats at a local car upholster place and he will show them off to anybody at HC if they want to see them(I hope they do a good job).
Now, this guy is NOT skinny by any means. Actually, he is very large and of course, he not only hits the right side, but the left side of the seat is starting to wear as well. Oh well, such a price to pay for leather.
I have been told that you gotta get your behind in and sat down without touching the bolster, but for this guy that is very impossible.
Ok, so its ME that I am talking about!!! And I am very hard on the seat.
