Leather questions

I have the regular (non-extended) leather in my Z4. Through tribal knowledge I understand that most car leathers are treated with a top coat (vinyl?) protectant. If this is true then how do leather treatment/conditioners work?

I'm not sure if that is true but I have always had great success with products from http://www.leatherique.com , they have some information on their site too

I've never heard that before ducks, I know they get treated with something at the factory but vinyl? That might explain why some here have issues with the sides of their leather seats. Maybe those seats didn't get good coverage of something - interesting.

The protectant from the factory (nope, not vinyl) wears off like any other protectant. Probably has the same properties as what leather shoes have, and once it is gone, you have to apply your own preference. :)

Not a protectant, but some type of coating that is put on the leather. This protects it from UV etc. Or I just may be smokin' some bad weed huh?

Here is what I was just told:

The complex tanning process of chromed tanned hide’s results in the fat liquoring and oils necessary to keep the hide soft and pliable being locked in and therefore there is no need to supplement them. Traditional type conditioner’s cannot penetrate the finished hide, but rather sit on the surface until they are removed by contact with clothing or evaporate. The same is true of most oil-based conditioners, but they may also have an adverse effect on polyurethane.

Water-based leather care products are able to permeate the finished leather or the polyurethane covering as its molecules are much smaller; oil has larger molecules than water and are unable to penetrate.
