Leather Cleaner

Hi, many years ago someone suggested on a forum I used to frequent that the best way to clean leather seats was to use the lather from Pears soap, rub it in with a soft brush then remove with a damp cloth rinsed frequently.
It worked wonders, dont know if someone has already posted something similar, but thought I will share it anyway.
Try it you will be surprised how clean the leather comes out, all for 99p from the pound shop.
Rgds

Did a quick google for that and found some interesting videos, but can't watch with sound at the moment so struggled a bit.

I've been using Autoglym Interior Cleaner both professionally and personally for 35 years.20200125_111927.jpg You will not find a better complete cleaner for all interior surfaces including leather. A 5 litre tub costs approx £24 on Ebay and will last you years. I dilute mine 50:50 and use it as an APC also. It's awesome on engine bays, rubber mats and tyre walls too

I generally advocate Johnson's baby wipes to clean. Followed up with purpose made leather wipes to nourish.
I would go with the baby wipe recommendation. Anything used on a baby’s skin is unlikely to contain harsh chemicals. I have used these effectively for a variety of purposes over the years. In my working days I wore a suit and often a silk tie. Baby wipes were best at removing any stains from the ties. Much better than the proprietary products you can buy which often left some residue. They might not be sufficiently aggressive for really dirty seats but imo they are unlikely to do any damage and are worth trying before spending money on more expensive specialist products. Good luck and let us know what you finally decide to use and how effective it was.

Came across a video on Youtube mix 1 part Woolite to 5 or 6 parts water and scrub with a suitable brush. I just tried it and it's come out a treat, done a way better job than the leather cleaner from furnitureclinic.co.uk which cost me some 20 quid!

Is the cleaned bit at the top of that picture, the matte looking section? Thats what I'm looking for.

What constitutes a suitable brush? Stiff bristles?

Yes correct the top part of the photo. I just used a new hard bristle toothbrush! Worked amazingly well and cost next to nothing compared to the so called professional cleaning solutions on the market. Now I just have to do the rest of the interior and then coat it with Gyeon Leather Shield.

Which Woolite did you use? There's a few different types.

I didn't know that, here in Spain I could only find one type and it is in a pink bottle and just says Woolite for delicate and wool clothes. I guess it must be the standard / original version? I actually bought it to wash my microfibres and then discovered that it can be used to clean leather too.

If it works post a pic! if it doesn't don't blame me :poke:  I finished cleaning the rest of my interior yesterday and it's looking real good! I need to get some colour dye to cover the minor scuffing on the bolster and then coat it with Gyeon Leather Shield.

Haha, I will test on a small patch.

Do you make the solution, dip the brush, and then scrub the seats?

Maybe scrub is the wrong word, a medium pressure?

I mixed the solution in a spray bottle, spray a little onto the seat and scrub using light to medium pressure and wipe off with a microfibre towel. For some of the smaller vertical areas I sprayed the solution onto the brush and then brushed it on.

Just to throw another product to the fray.

When I got the car I just used APC to give them a good scrub, and they look pretty good but still need a bit of a going over. Im slowly getting the car upto standard.

Im going to give Dojo Juice a go on the leather as like the other guy said (got shot down) leather conditioner mostly sits on the leather and builds a grinding paste that deteriorates your leather faster by first wearing the coating then you get cracks (Based upon Dr Leather yep I'm going to get shot down too).

There are quite a few good reviews of these on detailing world and some amazing before/afters.

It is really good stuff. I use it and it gives the leather a wonderful non gloss finish. See below.Screenshot_20200301-091143_Instagram.jpg

Do you apply anything after using this as it suggests its a cleaner that leaves the leather ready for conditioner to bond to it :?

Nope. The instructions say not to as it says conditioners trap contamination and can lead to increasing wear and derogation.

It's a two step process with a sealant applied after cleaning so it's pretty safe either way.

Confusing me now Dan :) is it a 2 step process with something on top after the cleaner or do you just use it & leave alone ?

I have just done the treatment.

Used 5:1 ratio, quite a strong solution, perhaps next time I would try 10:1 (water:woolite)

It has however, took the shine from the leather and restored the matte finish.

Seats don’t look as new, but it was my first go at it.

There are two products. The first cleans, the second seals. Both water based. :)
