leaking car question

My new purchase has a damp smell. All the carpets are bone dry. My roof panel is corroded at both front corners. My question is, could the bubbling cause water to get behind the rubber and go down the a pillar and under the carpet?

I think the car sat for at least a year without a mot. Could that cause the smell? Also, since you are more knowledgeable about these cars, is condensation inside the car normal?

No itโ€™s not normal, it must be damp/wet somewhere, you need to dry it out, possibly place a small dehumidifier in or some of those little crystals. Oneโ€™s itโ€™s dry you can then see if the condensation comes back.

Nothin is obviously wet. Could it be under the boot carpet?

Is it a 'damp' smell, or a 'musty' smell?

Could be just down to the car sitting around for a long period, unused.
As said above, if the cabin filter and/or a/c evaporator were dirty when last used, all sorts of nasties can 'grow' over time.
First things I would do would be change the cabin filter as it's easy and cheap, then put one of those car bomb things that clean any nasties from the a/c (with the heater fan running and on recirc for however long it takes)

Also get some silicone based rubber care stuff and go over all the big rubber seals. Assuming the rubbers aren't perished, that should at least prevent any more moisture getting in.

Running the car with the heater on full, the A/C on (assuming that is working and the drain tube isn't blocked) and the fan set to recirc will get rid of any dampness pretty quickly aswell, as long as it's not saturated, which it doesn't sound like it is.

If there is any water in the boot/ battery compartment, I wouldn't expect to be able to smell it in the cabin.

Just for clarity, you are looking for something like Gummi Pflege - that is still its name in the UK - available on Amazon and all sorts of places.

Yup. Got that and air con evaporator cleaner and a cabin filter. The foam on the roof motor was wet when I bought it but that whole area is dry now. I do love a challenge.๐Ÿ˜

When I bought my current E89 it had an inch of water in the boot (despite the seller insisting it was dry). Once fully dried out it has never come back and the car is left outside. In my case I think it was over zealous use of a pressure washer, so don't presume you have a leak just because there is moisture in the boot.

Come to think of it, the garage washed it before I picked it up. They would have used a pressure washer.
That would make perfect sense.
