Leak over door sill.

The water is coming in just in front of the join and runs down to the carpet when it rains. My membrane is pretty cut up but I silicone sealed the membrane.
Does water coming in over rubber door sill seal point to the membrane still ?
 
I have a very similar leak too (drivers side only), I think that my water is entering at the top of the door and running down to exit just where your white towel is.

I'd be interested in any answers that you get.

Is that tricky/pricy to do yourself?
 
Mine occasionally does that under heavy rain, it's a flipping nuisance. For the record my door membrane was checked by dealer and is in perfect condition so definitely not that. I did lift and raise the door seal up at the point the water was pooling and dribbling over, doesn't need to be raised by much to stop it, well not on mine anyway, so a bit of trial and error. I also gave the door rubbers a few coats of Gummi Pflege which also helped. Since raising the rubber and using Gummi Pflege the interior has managed to survive all the extreme rain we have recently had. Still got a cloth down, but so far it has stayed dry :D

It may be in perfect condition, but there only needs to be a 1cm gap in the butyl tape holding it to the door for it to leak. This is a common problem across all BMWs, not just the Z4. And the dealer thinks it is 'sound proofing' (that's what it is called on realoem) so I wouldn't trust their expert opinion on the matter.

I was getting loads of water in my car before replacing both and renewing the butyl tape. Not a drop since even with all this heavy rain.
 
I have the foam membrane for the passenger side and a roll of the black mastic stuff to seal it as well, its totally unused and would have gone on my 03 model had I kept it. Cost of delivery should do it if you want it

By the way I should have added I had exactly the same issue after an indy replaced the window mech, when I took the door card off the membrane was in a state and I complained and repaired with gaffer tape. About 2 months after I complained he called me to say he had this in stock and to come down to collect which impressed me but I just never got round to fitting
 
After taking the door card off I hosed the window and saw where the leak was coming from. I have silicone sealed it up and all seems ok so far.

Thanks for the offer, but mine is driver's side.

The driver's side regulator was replaced about 4 years ago so it could be membrane, but I don't think it's been leaking all of that time. Looks like I've got to get some trim removal tools and get brave enough to take the door card off and see what it looks like.

Do you need to disconnect the battery (airbag issues) before taking to card off or will I be able to have a look without doing so?

You can take the door card off without worrying about the battery but don't disconnect the airbag

Thanks, great write up, the video is excellent too! Trim pry tools now ordered, tears to follow later.....
 
After reading all of the advice, watching the Youtube videos and ordering in the plastic trim removal tools, I finally took the plunge today....I'm beginning to wish I hadn't... :(

In disassembling the door, I broke one of the clips that holds the window mechanism cable on to the door card (a tiny piece of plastic). BMW say that in spite of it having a parts number, I would have to order a complete cable at £88 to replace. As it only seems to secure the connection and prevent it rattling out, I guess I'll have to do without.

Membrane was a little damaged and not sealed to the door very well and I've re-adhered the butyl tape and botched it with duct tape for now as it's out of sight, but at c£29 for a new one from the BMW dealer I'll probably replace it soon.
