Great turnout from people which won't have gone unnoticed, but cycling has got "fad" written all over it in big letters. As a spectator sport it's terrible. Wait for hours, been and gone in 30s! That's before you add the sports' rather murky goings on into the equation. They'll tell you they've cleaned it up but I noticed Froome's best buddy got busted recently too.

Not sure about 'fad'

Take a look at cycling shops. A decade ago they were as good as dead and now thriving. I have a friend who's a serous cyclist in Eire and he tells me his club dropped to 100 members and has now grown to +1000 steadily over the last 6 or 7 years.

I believe TDF is now the largest sporting event in the world

Probably more reflective of social attitude to getting fitter, out if cars, etc.

I'm not saying it's not a big event CJ, but I would be amazed it was the largest sporting event in the world!! What about the FIFA World Cup, Olympics, F1 for example? Surely they must all totally dwarf the TDF?

I actually read that as the largest CYCLING sporting event. its definitely not the biggest sporting event.. most people couldnt care less.

I couldn't imagine many taxpayers complaining about improved roads Kev ?
It seemed everyone who attended enjoyed it & its not often joe public can attend a major sporting event for free
I don't see the downside on this occasion , it has,nt cost in excess of what it raised so can only be judged a success in my eyes

Very true, that is a benefit to the locals.

Was speaking to someone today who told me the idea is to visit the countries of past winners, hence the UK.

I'll stand by my statement. The TDF has an estimated 12m to 15m spectators lining the course over the 3 week period.

Find me another event with anything like that many attending (and I'm not counting tv audiences)

No idea about World Cup, but let me guess generously at 50 matches with 100k, would give me 5m

Hardly a sporting event, but a parade.
