Le Tour

Didn't fancy the crowds so stayed away but no doubting the raging success of the Yorkshire effort  top job done

Just go out my office carpark door and im right on the roadside with direct access (no barrier!). Caravane a bit .. dull.

Will go back in a bit..

Went up to Grinton Moor in Swaledale on Saturday. Must admit I wasn't that fussed about going but was persuaded by a few friends who are much keener cyclists than I am. So glad I did, the spectacle and the atmosphere from the thousands of people lining the route was brilliant. Here's a few pics from the day.

+1

....and if I wanted to look at blokes in lycra shorts that are so tight you can tell their religion, I could just pop along the coast to Brighton...

I wasn't saying the TDF isnt fun, i just wasn't impressed by the Caravane, especially throwing Haribo at kids faces at 30mph+

Nice to have the opportunity to see the cyclists in person, shame it pissed it down for the buildup and duration of their passing (all 30s of it!).

I dont think investing in sporting events, culture, special interest stuff is money "wasted" Tim, it's good to do fun things, especially if it promotes exercise for fatties like me.

Hasn't the Gov't wasted 10 million of tax payers money on all of this?

Tim.

£4m invested by various councils across the Yorkshire region to stage the event. Estimated £100m generated for the local economy. Not sure how you can call that money wasted.

lol is that people are led to believe.

Tim.

Great turnout from people which won't have gone unnoticed, but cycling has got "fad" written all over it in big letters. As a spectator sport it's terrible. Wait for hours, been and gone in 30s! That's before you add the sports' rather murky goings on into the equation. They'll tell you they've cleaned it up but I noticed Froome's best buddy got busted recently too.

Shouldn't it be called "'t' tour of Yorkshire"

How can a race with the word FRANCE in it, start in England?

I agree with Tim - when the tour of Britain came through North Devon 2 or 3 years ago, we had lots of road works beforehand making sure the roads were up to scratch...must've cost thousands for a few minutes cycling. Yorkshire probably had pot-hole free roads at the moment!

How does it raise £millions for the economy?

Imagine every litre of fuel the estimated million's spent just to get to the area :?
then imagine 85p of that litre going straight in the governments wallet :o soon makes sense eh
Then there's VAT on all the hot foof consumed by the estimated million's :?
Vat on the hotel & other accommodation :?
General figures suggest around £100million for the economy so a good weekend for Mr Osborne

Not sure about 'fad'

Take a look at cycling shops. A decade ago they were as good as dead and now thriving. I have a friend who's a serous cyclist in Eire and he tells me his club dropped to 100 members and has now grown to +1000 steadily over the last 6 or 7 years.

I believe TDF is now the largest sporting event in the world

Probably more reflective of social attitude to getting fitter, out if cars, etc.

I couldn't imagine many taxpayers complaining about improved roads Kev ?
It seemed everyone who attended enjoyed it & its not often joe public can attend a major sporting event for free
I don't see the downside on this occasion , it has,nt cost in excess of what it raised so can only be judged a success in my eyes

In London, cycling has never been so popular - sadly its in that limbo period where infrastructure/policing/road users adapt to the amount of cyclists now on the roads (i preferred it before it became the must-have commuter toy and i was the only one on the roads :D). I expect in a year or two things will be much nicer for cyclists.

Froome out

That man was in pain both physical and mental.

Fantastic day of racing though.
