A mate has just sent me this film of Mike Hawthorn driving the D Type Jaguar around Le Mans in 1956. Superb stuff...

Brilliant Mike the Bike
Great film, loved the pit crew with the knotted hanky on his head. 8)
The Camara is the size of a suitcase bolted on the back of the car. Imagine health and safety today, running round with the public

Enjoyed that Dewi, thanks for posting.

I went every year from 1981 to '91 - inc the years of the Silk Cut Jags and Tom Walkinshaw, good years.

Thank you for the link. That is some great history.

I really enjoy this forum even though I am on the wrong side of the pond. Much better than the state side forums.

Amazing stuff. Great image quality for 70 years ago - seeing the installation of the camera and microphone looks funny but would have been cutting edge technology 70 years ago. :D

Ditto but not the race. We are staying near Tour, but will take a trip north to have a look at the place.

I loved the film, quality was amazing

Did I tell you I was a dyslexic?! There's only a few years in it - picky picky!

Fabulous - wonder what bhp that Jaguar had in 1956? I imagine it would be somewhere near what my 3.0si pushes out today?

Anyone remember the need to fit suppressors if you fitted a radio years ago - to stop the interference like that you could hear on the playback.

175mph in 1956 and taking that curve flat out on the Mulsanne 'straight' - bet it feels like threading a needle in the dark!

Brilliant bit of footage - loved the microphone. . . .

Thanks for posting

:driving:

Believe me the difference between 58 and 70 feels a lot more than any other 12 year gap I have lived so far! Let's hope I still have and am enjoying the Zed in 12 years' time!
