Le Mans 2018 - who is going? :)

As June edges closer I wondered if any fellow z4 owners were attending this year. After a few years of practical car sharing I’m dusting off the M to use is it was intended

I’ll be on the Thursday morning euro tunnel crossing at 07:06 and camping at the Thomas Cook Sporting Village.

Thinking of getting a sanef auto toll tag to make things easier :driving:

I'm not doing the 24 hours this year as we're going to the Le Mans Classic for the first time.

The SANEF tag is well worth getting. Even better is to try to do some of the journey off the autoroutes. There are great, almost traffic-free roads and they are easy to overtake on with long straights.

If you don't know the Le Mans ropes then I suggest you look on Beermountain.com and go to the Great British Welcome at Saint Saturnin on the Friday. This year's marque is BMW!

Whatever you do, have a great time!

Would welcome any advice on where to mount the sanef tag in the zed, not keen on permanently sticking the holder to the screen so may need to hold it up or Macgyver something :D

Am a relatively seasoned Le Mans goer, shall be the 7th year running :D Can see the appeal of the classic, less stag parties and drunkeness and some amazing cars with character - thankfully the Thomas Cook site tends to price out the riff raff  Beer mountain is a great link for those thinking of going or for their first time, thanks for sharing :)

Just hold the tag up to the window. At least it’s something to do between nodding off and getting speeding fines. I’m going... but via Santander this time. :driving:

We should grab some beers. Every year there is a thread like this but I don’t think people generally manage to meet up.

I used a low adhesive double-sided sticker just to the right of the rear view mirror. Came off easily and didn't leave any marks.

Should be a great drive via Santander!

i'm going! my first time, but with a mate whos been 5 times before i think. Not taking the zed, will be in the 330d for comfortable cruising. looking forward to ticking it off the motorsport must dos!

Do you know which campsite your staying at - can recommend the great British welcome at Saint Saturnin if your sober enough to drive out before race day 😁

A guy on Pistonheads is organising a convoy to the Le Mans Classic:

It will take a long time but it avoids autoroutes other than to the first stop. That is one of the attractions for me joining in - I did some of the journey off the autoroutes last year but really want to do the whole journey, especially as time will dictate all autoroutes coming home.

Seems as though there'll be quite a mix of cars.

That sounds good,I’ll see if the times tally up with our travel times,

Adam, this is all excelllent but please change “whose” to “who’s” in the subject line. My left eyelid is twitching. :D

LM18 sounds like it might be a bit of an Alonso-fest at this rate. Not that that’s a bad thing.

Sorted.

You guys put my blood pressure up, nipping across the channel to LeMans, lucky basta*$s, I’m going to Vancouver Island Motorsport Park on the 25th of Feb, for coffee and sandwiches :(. Does that count?

If you set off driving now you could make it to Le Mans in time for the 24 Hours!

Whilst it is a long way, from what I have read and seen on the TV, Vancouver Island isn't all bad!

Enjoy the coffee and sandwiches.

LMP1 entry list for 2018, good to see some different names competing to give Toyota a race.

I’m going with another forum member in either his M or mine, not decided yet. I have no idea where our pitch is or what the craic is, but it’s being organised by a bunch of people on a FB group I’m a member of who have done it for years. One of them drives in a box van that contains everything the required, including an actual kitchen sink

Wish I had a mate with a box van. Two of us went in my M last year. Once the (small) tent and two sleeping bags were in the boot, each of us was then rationed to our clothes and washbags each fitting into a carrier bag!

Great weekend though. If you haven't been before, this won't be the last time!

A few years ago in May I got chatting to someone at the end of my road who was fettling his GT40 replica ready for his trip to Le Mans.

It turns out he is a bus mechanic, and he takes his GT40 with some other mates, one of whom has a bus with beds, kitchen sink, cooker, fridge, etc. that they all use during their stay. That sort of set up would work for me.

I'm sure the same guy still lives there, although his daily C220di seems to have been replaced with a Mustang!

Maybe I need to have another chat with him. :)

It does sort of happen. First time we went we literally took the clothes we were wearing and not much else. These days we have the van with the sky box, the proper beer fridges, kitchen stoves etc. It’s an inevitability!
