Latest thoughts on summer tyres

Bought an 07 Z4MC at Christmas from Jason Barker @ Birds.

It came with rear winter tyres which with temperatures increasing I am looking to replace for the summer.

I have read a few of the tyre threads on the forum and wondered what the current concensus is on best summer tyre.

Whilst cost is always a factor, it is not as important to me as grip (wet & dry) as well as comfort/noise.

Any recommednations, anyone tried the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 PS3 which seem to have been reviewed well ?

Any advise welcomed.

Hi and welcome to the forum  ,can't help regarding the tyres but post some pics of your zed we like pictures on here

I too am looking to replace my RFT's with summer tyres this month. Research in this part of the world where summer temperatures are regularly in the mid thirties but when it rains it does so with avengance is firmly in favour of the Continental Sport contact 5. Independant testing by various bodies including the respected TUV seem to support this choice. Certainly not the cheapest, though slightly less than the Michelin and by all accounts better in the wet. I supose it depends to some degree how you use the car. Many on this site favour the Falken, it's certainly available at a good price. But like I said , I am not speaking from experience with regards tyres for the Z, that is just the opinion over here.

I've run the Vredstein Ultrac for the last 12 months and they have been ace. You will never find the limit of these tyres on the road but they do squeal quite a bit on track. IMHO the michelins dont stack up. I managed to buy a set of 19" road tyres (Vred) and 18" track tyres (Kuhmo) for the same cost of a single set of PS2s or Cups.

There are some new Michelins, Michelin Pilot Super Sport
I bought them but I still have to put them on my car.

I've been using Ultrac Sessantas for more than a year now and i've already gone through two sets. I really like them on the road. Great performance for the money.

The only track work i've done is a sort of Autocross type event on a very twisty narrow track, they were pretty worn but even so i expected more from them and didn't like them at all that day.

I have another brand new set which i'm going to use to the ground and then i'll probably change to the Michelin Pilot Super Sports since they'll be available to our stock sizes!

Have you seen any real-world reviews of the PSS tyres yet? I'm curious...

Apart from that early Michelin sponsored event no i havent but with their recent track record and the sterling reviews of the PSS's predecessor the PS2 i'm guessing they'll be pretty good.

The PS3 isn't the sort of tyre you want to put on an M, it's the replacement for the Exalto. The PS2 has been replaced by the Michelin Super Sport as mentioned above. I've read very good reports on them by people on other forums who've tried them and if you can bear the costs then that's what I would go for. By the way if you've got winters on the rear and summers on the front you should replace them as soon as you can, they have totally different characteristics and must ruin the handling.

I'd love to read your thoughts on the Super Sports once you've put some miles on them.

I will probably go for these also although I like the look of the Yokohama Advan Sport which look quite chunky, like an R tyre. Expensive!

The Conti 3's have two choices, normal and assymetric. Is there a type to go for, would fitting the assymetric ones be best?

Conti 5's are available for the front but unfortunately not for the rear yet for the M.

Have descided to go for either the Mitchelin PS2s or the newer Super Sport.

However, the SS only comes in 275/40/R18s. This obviously changes the rolling circumferance of the tyre. What i am trying to figure out is if running hte larger tyre would cause the odometer to read a higher milage than actually covered ?

Anyone have the brain power to work out ?

There you go :D http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

As for the sizes, Michelin's website says that there is a 225/45-18 tire available but not a 255/40-18 yet for our rears. I'm sure they'll release them soon though.
