Done as well, I do not see teh point of road tolls, especially on existing roads! we have a system for charging people for how much they drive, its called fuel tax!

We already pay for the road network, how can they think we need to pay twice... or is it thrice
It's about time we worked out how to get rid of the 650 grabbing feckers and start again.

. I can see the point of road tolls: it generates the income from those who drive more miles, which IMO is fair. But there's a far simpler and easier solution:- abolish road fund licence
- add an appropriate amount onto fuel tax to compensate
No administration that would be required for road tolls, and fairer for all as those that use the roads most contribute the most to their upkeep (assuming funds from fuel tax are actually spent on road maintenence, which of course we all know is what happens...)
Except we already pay proportionally through fuel duty. If you use more you already pay more. If you drive an efficient and economical car you pay less. No need for toll roads or adding to fuel duty
agreed, but there is a need if you are going to abolish the RFL. Which is a completely idieotic system!
My old man as an X5 3.0d which costs him over £450 a year to tax, he also has an american mobile home with 7.4L V10 petrol.... which costs £125 per year to tax! HOW does that work!
or in my case i have a 318d which is £30 per year tax and travels over 20k per annum and my 35is which covers less than 4k per annum and costs £265!!! the system is completely floored!

We pay so much in fuel duty already, I'd argue they should just scrap the RFL. Make the MOT test more expensive to cover the "standing charge" if you want. On new cars you're already paying car tax, and vat on the car tax. And tax on the insurance premium...

I don't think it is a great idea but they do have a reason.
An investor builds a road and charges for it.
People pay or not, their choice.
A new road costs the government nothing. That is a big bonus.
If we could trust them not to extend the plans to the motorways I wouldn't be much bothered.

Unfortunately some of the proposals are to place tolls on existing roads to help pay or upgrades, or in the case of the 2nd Mersey crossing at Widnes/Runcorn thy entry to put a toll on the existing bridge to help pay or the new bridge (which will also have a toll once completed).
You can't trust the government (local or otherwise) to stop where they say they will stop, as they'll just get a framework approval in place based on the least harm option and then change it as they see fit to screw everyone over.
Even the Mersey tunnels that were supposed to be 'free' once the loans to build it were paid off will never be free. Their initial argument wa that the building costs have been paid off so we no longer pay for that, but there's an ongoing operational cost that has to be funded. They raised it a few years back to pay for the Liverpool team scheme, which never happened, yet they're raising it again and people are rightly asking why.

The M6 toll hasn't been a roaring success but it hasn't really cost me anything either.
Fuel duty is the way to go but as the take is falling because people are refusing to travel and journeys are considered and rejected the government now needs to be able to target those that have to travel whatever the cost.
I am reasonably certain that tax will keep growing until most businesses have gone bust, when they will put the tax up again because they need to fund unemployment.
We must be passed the tipping point now.
