Looking for some advice on hotels in Vegas!

I've tried tripadvisor and the like but it's a minefield with so many hotels in one place and so many people wanting different things from it.

We basically want something central, not dated and no more than around $300 a night.

And the mrs has added it MUST have a really nice pool area!

So who's been and where have you stayed?

MGM Grand. Humungous hotel, loads to do, not ruinously expensive and great location. Also, read up about the Vegas $20 room upgrade trick

I've been a few times, will be there in a couple of weeks on my way home from Arizona.

the hotel type depends on what type of person you are, party animal, staid middle aged couple, whatever? I stayed in the Monte Carlo once, pretty laid back , not outrageous.....sort of hum drum for Vegas. The Paris is OK, all the ones on the strip are nice you just need to pick your style.

and definitely ask if there any upgrades available .... I was upgraded to a huge suite with a hot tub and a massive marble bathroom , I think it was $20 extra... 8) 8)

and don't take business cards on the street unless you are collecting a set of Hookers to go with your old sets of tea cards...

Strange this topic has come up, looking at doing week in LA in March and pondered about a couple of nights in Vegas - was browsing rates earlier today.

Stayed at New York New York last time I went but your budget will get you much better than that (plus not best location or pool).

Personally will try somewhere like the Aria or Bellagio if I go again :)

Ps being a regular HHonors member I'd be tempted to try the Elara for some points and perks...

Funnily enough we were looking at doing a few days in LA at the end maybe.

Have you decided on where you're staying in LA yet?

What have you got planned while you're there?

Rent a sports car and run the malibu canyons, do the road where James Dean died. Nice twisty's

Looking at the MGM Grand today. Need to do some more research on the suites.

Thanks for the tip! :D

We're reasonably young still (28 & 25) but don't want a crazy 24hr party trip! Somewhere in between really!

Wouldn't mind a "set of hookers" actually....

I went to LA about 12 years ago as a young kid and did all the tourist stuff, and likewise went to Vegas only couple of years back so what we do would kinda depend on the GF who hasn't been before.

So I just need to worry about flights and hotels - a job I quite enjoy. Flights will be BA (itching to try the A380  ), accommodation wise intending to burn some points to keep costs down but given LA is spread over such an area where exactly I'd look to stay will depend on what the GF wants to do. There is quite a nice Hilton at the Universal Studios but I think I'd like to move around a bit.

Problem is we've got 7 days to play with, take a Vegas trip out of that and all of a sudden it becomes a bit of a time restraint... only investigating the idea at this stage

Oh yeah, when you look at a map of the strip don't be fooled by distance, those city blocks are incredibly long and it's miles long... take a shuttle or a cab for the longer trips

I will be in a La Quinta off the strip when I stop, the strip hotels allow dogs but they have to be under 50 lbs and I will be traveling with my Golden Retriever (and the wife and a friend ) ... all over 50 lbs

Monteray Bay has a good Pool complex. I'm staying at the Venetian in a few weeks time and have rented an R1200GS BMW for exploration. :)

Best luxury hotel is the Venitian followed by Wynn and Encore. Mandalay Bay has a Four Seasons........but City Centre is the happening place right now....and it's drop dead gorgeous and as modern as they come

Thanks for all the input all!

It looks as if the wife has made the decision for me!

She's set on Encore @ Wynn!

Anybody stayed there?

Next I need to find out where to stay and what to see in LA and surrounding areas!?

Excellent choice! Right opp The fashion Mall....

In LA, Hyatt in Century City....where they filmed Die Hard.....right next to Westfield.....really nice part of town. Half a mile from Rodeo Drive and a 15 min drive to Santa Monica. Great classy hotel, great bar and food too.....half hour from LAX...

If you want classy, try Viceroy at Santa Monica......

Take plenty of pics of the Venetian Stu and post them up.

My mate runs a printing business in Vegas so if you do need any business cards let me know. :D

Don't be put of by the Tropicana's dated exterior, we stayed there for a week in March '11 & it had been completely refurbished internally, the rooms were lovely & we liked the location being on a crossroads with thw MGM Grand, Excalibur & New York New York, the pool was shut at the time (for a refurb again) so can't comment on that.

Did anyone see the TV programme on the Venetian last night? - definitely worth a watch, if we ever go back to LV I think I'd like to stay there or the Bellagio, need to win a lottery or 2 first
