Laptop screen 1/3 dead

So my trust Sony laptop has decided that I only need to see the bottom 2/3 of the screen. The rest is either a plain colour or random lines.

Several reboots makes no difference.

Connected to a remote monitor it works perfect and display normally, so I guess it's screen or connection to the screen.

Anyone with experience comment if it's dead and should be given a burial, or are such things economic to seek repair?
 
check the ribbon cable, it usually gets mashed around the hinges depending on the model. If it's not had an impact it's likely it's a cheap part that's failed.

reasonable speed laptops are becoming almost expendable at £350 ish so I guess a bit like a car, Sony screen repair will likely be 50% of that, is it a write off?
 
If it was the graphics card it wouldnt work on the second monitor has the screen had a bang? The LCD my have split inside especially if you are seeing colour banding. A new screen will be around £100 (ebay) depends if you want to do it yourself. Have repaired multiple Mac screens but they are very simple to take apart. Labour could be £150 to change a screen.
 
I paid £45 for a samsung screen. just seen there's sony screens on ebay for the same price.20 mins to fit after following a how to on youtube. :D
 
Happened to my work Dell, had to run on a docking station for a few months.

It will be fixable with a new screen as the others have said, but if you secretly fancy a new laptop anyway this could be the excuse you are looking for :thumbsup:
 
Sony 17" screens are around £100 for the FX series. They are a complete pain to fit as the whole chassis needs to be dismantled - not a job for the faint-hearted IMO. I replaced one, but not without a lot of curses and near misses - and ended up replacing the machine 6 months later anyway :roll:
 
Thanks guys. Sorry I didn't get back sooner to these responses. Had some real work, then Mrs CJ just wrecked a built in microwave. Not good...

So no impact or bangs as it just sits on my desk. Usually just open and close the screen so I like the idea of checking the ribbon or changing screen. Love a challenge and it's not urgent as I run it on a monitor most of the time and if not the iPad these days.
