Lakes - Hotel

after any recommendations...

Planning a four day trip to the lakes at the end of August (yes I know it is gonna be busy...) :D

This is for our tenth wedding anniversary so would like a nice hotel. I know loads of nice self catering cottages as that is what we normally do, but we are looking for it to be a little more special.

anybody have any recommendations ?

My in-laws have a cottage on Ullswater so I am over there quite a bit and know the area fairly well.

Me and the wife stayed in a place called the Punch Bowl Inn for a couple of days after out wedding and can wholly recommend there. Its location is Kind of between Kendal and Windermere, the rooms and food were exellent :thumbsup:

If your after somewhere really special (and the budget stretches!!) then check out The Samling on Windermere or The Sharrow Bay on Ullswater.

A friend stayed there last year - highly disappointing - dated rooms and the food wasnt great - not up to Relais normal standards apparently. Although being its place of invention the Sticky Toffee pudding was good (which you can buy in Waitrose!).

the samling isnt available for the dates we want and sharrowbay are only minimum period which is too long :roll:

Thats a shame - I know the former owners were a couple of gay guys I believe and when they had it, it was spectacular, especially the food.

Point of Order though....everyone knows that Sticky Toffee Pudding comes from Cartmel LOL :thumbsup:

Hmmm... I was there for dinner at the end of April and the food was outstanding! Its just retained its Michelin star for about the 12 year running or something.

With regard to the dated feel I hole heartedly agree it hasn't changed or been done out since it opened as a hotel 25 or so years ago but I got the impression that was the feel they where going for! If you want a modern trendy hotel then yeh this isnt one for you... the location though is simply stunning :thumbsup:
 
I've stayed at the Drunken Duck a couple of years ago for an Anniversary treat.

Quite expensive but great food, location and lodging (we were in the Garden Room).

She may well have just been unlucky then :thumbsup: I think also she thought it was going to be as nice as Gidleigh Park and Whatley Manor but it wasnt.

We like to eat here when we are in the lakes - it is without doubt my favorite restaurant anywhere

On the edge of the Lakes...I stayed here for the National Meet and may well do so again this year. Not cheap but beautiful old country house style, very quiet amd friendly.

Food and wine were fantastic...

we actually stay but we did have some lovely food at an inn called the Queens head next to Ulswater, the rooms looked v nice as well!
