Laid up Insurance.

I have recently renewed my Insurance and neither Chris Knott or Adrian Flux would do laid up insurance for the 6 months that the car will be of the road, in fact Adrian Flux's price went up! I'm just wondering what other people do regarding insuring their cars over the winter when they aren't been used.

Mine is stored in a locked garage, and won't be used between October and March and so it grates me to be paying full insurance when the car is not been used on the road, of course it is still covered for fire and theft, so the insurance is not without value.

I guess my options are

1. Keep the insurance
2. Cancel the insurance and take the risk for fire and theft (will probably save about £250)
3. Cancel the insurance and try and find a laid up insurance for 6 months

Realistically I can't see number 3 been worth the effort, I'm just wondering what route other forum members take, or if any members have come across an insurance that will take into account the 6 months the car is off the road.

Thanks in advance

See if any classic car insurers are willing to quote you ? I know the "age" is too new but maybe

How is it still covered for fire and theft when you don't have any active insurance policy on it?

I have a similar issue, but I have just decided to leave it insured and un tax it, atleast then if we get a great day in winter I can Tax it and just go out for a drive :)

Without an active policy it won't be covered, the only reason for keeping the insurance is so that if the house burns down or some toe rag decides they want a joy ride it will be :!:

I did think the same about being able to take it out, I would just keep it taxed throughout the winter if I was going to do that though then I wouldn't have the will power to stop myself driving it every weekend, salt or no salt!

I tried to find a modern classic insurance, but as soon as you mention modifications they lose interest, (at least online). After talking to Chris Knott, Adrian Flux, and getting quotes from Go Compare and the like, I just lost the will and just paid my money. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I've found the same as you, and realised it was cheaper to have a full year 'normal' policy than trying to get 2 separate policies for 6 months of driving & 6 months of storage.

So I just keep it insured & taxed all the time...just in case I get a nice day off that I want to drive it.

Not worth the hassle/admin fees/extra insurance costs just to potentially save £100 a year.

The only difference to your circumstances is that mine is not stored in a garage...it in the drive, blocked in by a wall & another 2 cars.

Try classic line,

Tax is a no brainer IMO you can sorn and tax a car online in a matter of minutes. Saves you a fair amount of cash if you don't pay for tax for a few months.

My insurance is only £200 so leave in place for the 4 months it's not in use. TBH not a cost I think about. where as the VED is knocked on the head which does save me £160 odd quid.

I work in insurance and my personal advice is to keep the vehicle insured, you might argue that you have never been broken into and live in a safe neighborhood however these cars are more commonly stolen recently and the likelihood of you getting the car back in one piece is slim that is if they can trace it at all.

Insurance should be taken into account when buying a car and shouldn't be looked at an optional.

I hate to say it but you can argue the cost all you want but insurance's are getting more expensive and motor is leading the way.

Since 2015 IPT (Insurance Premium Tax) has increased from 6% to currently 12%, in the industry we are predicting this to rise as high as 20%.

Now thats the kind of money I would like to be paying for my insurance!! Could you let me know who you use and whether its on a limited mileage policy?/

Insured all year, use it all year. Have it on a multi-car policy, last year with Admiral, this time with Sheilas Wheels as Admiral premium increased by over 20%.

I don't know how you guys that store it over winter last that long.... :o

If I don't drive mine for a week im biting my nails and pacing around like a druggie that's lost his fix... :driving:

Some people are getting good premiums, even though I'm 48 and haven't claimed for at least 15 years mine is about £480. Mind you the modified exhaust, skirts, and lowered suspension all increased the price, strangely modified wheels reduced it slightly as did adding my wife! I must just live in a dodgy area!

Anyway it seems from all the comments that there isn't a cheaper way that I'm missing, so I'll be keeping the insurance running through the winter.

John-e89 I know what you mean, I might not make March 8)

Thanks for the various bits of advice and comments, much appreciated

I've found that I'm better of sticking with mainstream insurance over the winter, even though I end up over insured. It seems to be a much more competitive market than specialist/classic insurance. Saves the hassle of changing as well.

At the last renewal I asked how much the premium would fall if I dropped the estimated mileage from 8k to 3k. It went UP by £30! The advisor said that lower usage must equate to a greater risk.

Likewise...

If you have to, I would just sorn it. I have the same issue with the M at the moment. There will be days where I will want to take her for a spin and it isn't really good to leave a car for 4 months without at least turning it over and moving the tyres to a different position.

I am with Admiral and the insurance is about £350 a year. For £30 a month, it isn't worth seeing £15K worth of car go up in flames.
