LA & San Diego

Hi Guys,

Were on a US West Coast tour shortly (yay). Our schedule was San Francisco, Monterrey, Pismo Beach, Death Valley, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon and Vegas. That's schedule WAS and not IS because the bit between Pismo and Vegas is national parks and due to the current budget dispute problems in the states has been cancelled. We're now doing LA and San Diego so looking for ideas as we've only had a couple of days to re plan so haven't really done any research. In LA we're stopping in West Hollywood and Mission Beach in SD.

LA leaves me cold really so hoping you guys can come up with some fun things to do. San Diego we're planning zoo and beach.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

San Diego - husband suggests Sea World, going to Coronado, Pacific Fleet HQ, Peace Garden, Gaslight District, Hooters. And all this time I thought he was hard at work on a business trip...... :o
 
Defo fit in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara on the coast.
Drive the coastal route 1 and also swing by Malabu
 
Nightmare for you. Your holiday brought back memories of my best holiday but we went the other way round - starting in LA (know what you mean about it - very overrated and not my thing - Holywood a dump) and onto San Fran via Palm Spring, Lake Havasu (nothing there bar old London Bridge), Grand Canyon, Vegas, Death Valley, Mamouth and Yosemite. Some of these will be impacted by the dispute. You could do the 17 mile drive around Pebble Beach (SF) And onto the beach at Carmel (Clint Eastwood used to be Major) - a nice day.

Let me know if 'the world famous Bushman' is still in central SF!

Personally I find LA and everything south (including San Diego) leaves me cold. I'd go to the Monterey/Carmel area and then head north though the wine country and on up through the redwoods to Mendocino and beyond. Depends what your into, but if it's scenery and nature that area is hard to beat.

Great shame about the budget dispute effects, the canyon lands are spectacular.
 
I went to LA once when my brother used to live there. We had an arguement then he couldn't be bothered to show me anything :| hope you have more fun then I did.
 
Santa Barbara is just a short 1.5 hours up the coast. Might be fun for a day. You could also then go over the mountains behind SB to Santa Ynez Valley - GREAT wine country with a lot of winerys and tasting.
Personally, I would get out of LA as soon as possible.

Down in San Diego - La Jolla is a nice small town on the coast just a little north. Old Town Cafe in downtown SD is great for Mexican food and Margaritas. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are a good call.

I would still not rule out Pismo and Monterey. You can take a most beautiful ride up Highway 1, stop at Cambria (Hearst Castle), past Big Sur (stop at Nepenthe's), and really have a nice time in Monterey (Cannery Row, the Aquarium), and Carmel. Monterey is about 7 hours by car from LA, on the coast highway.

Sorry about the National Parks... but there is still a lot to see on the California Coast.
 
Santa Barbara is a lovely town.
In LA the Getty Museum is excellent & if you like natural history visit the La Brea Tar Pits museum. Take a drive along Mulholland Drive/Highway for fantastic views of the city then through the mountains to drop down to the Pacific at Malibu.
 
Well the route is now booked and confirmed as

San Francisco - 2 nights
Monterey - 1 night
Pismo Beach - 2 nights
LA - 3 nights
San Diego(Mission beach) - 2 nights
Las Vegas - 4 nights

oh and hire car from Alamo is allegedly a Mustang, but I've been there before and it ended up being a Sebring :thumbsdown:
 
Wow, fantastic trip ahead :thumbsup:

+1 for pebble beach 17mile drive.
Just stick to as much of the coastal route h1 as you can.
Monterey, Carmel , Santa Barbara, all the beaches along the way :)

I quite enjoyed LA, Peterson automotive museum was cool... lots of eating and drinking
