You don't "need". If you corner at the same speeds as you would on road legal tyres, all will be fine. But if you want to exploit the slicks, yes there is the possibility of breaking the spot welds.

BTW if you do your European jaunts with Bookatrack they bring a fully equipped tyre truck should you muller your tyres, or will transport spare sets of wheels for you (for $$$ of course).

Yes, very aware of the BaT service, but it's still not a great option as they aren't located very conveniently for me.

Re. "needing" a cage, you do need it as most track day operators require you to have a cage/rollover protection if you are running slicks.
