Koni Yellow on stock 3.0si m-sport springs?

Hey all,

Can one run the Koni Yellow struts with stock 3.0si M-sport suspension springs? I think the common thing to do is running Eibach or H&R springs but I'm really not interested in lowering the height of the car from stock.

I did read this thread throughly ( https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132346 ) which has convinced me Koni Yellow is probably the way to go. I'm trying to get rid of the "crashy" feeling and at 72K miles the struts are definitely overdue for replacement.

If you are leaving the standard springs then you are probably best off going with a set of Sachs which are designed to use with OE springs.

^ this.

If you are still running the original shocks after 72k miles, you will notice a big improvement simply by replacing them.

OK,

Earlier this week I called Koni North America (I'm in the US) and spoke with a very cool guy named Lee who apparently was involved in the development of the Koni shocks+struts for our Z4s. He helped do a lot of the testing of the Koni designs on an actual Z4 so his knowledge is first-hand. He's also a Z enthusiast :).

Directly from Koni, the Yellow Sport is designed to 100% work with the OE M-sport suspension but also support the stiffer and/or shorter springs from H&R, Eibach, etc.

His perspective, and after the call I'm convinced, was that BMW pushed heavily on reducing costs on items like the struts, so the OE struts were a pretty compromised design resulting in the 'crashy' feeling we've experienced. He stated the Koni Yellow should be an all-around improvement, whether you're after comfort or sport.

He also mentioned that Koni didn't make the rears externally adjustable so they could keep the OE fittament (10mm tube) vs. the 12mm that's required to have made them top-adjustable.

TCKline sells a top-adjustable version of the Koni rear shocks and if you get the Rogue Engineering shock mounts (which seems like a no brainer, better design, re-enforced, can remove the strut from the bottom now) they come in a 12mm option. Unfortunately TC said they won't get more of this version until December.

So for anyone else in the future reading this, I'm convinced Koni Yellow sport is a better choice over OEM Sachs and the fact the Koni's are adjustable (albeit for the rears you have to remove them) seems like all upside to me.

Thanks for posting, Koni were also top of my list, I’d also keep my stock Si springs because they seem about right.
