Knocking noise - going insane!!

I have a slight knocking (metal to metal) sound coming from the passenger side (just behind their head area) when driving over small bumps with the roof up.
It's been to the dealers but they said they cant seem to find the fault and have made lots of turns of screws ect but to no joy.
I have tried the shelf up and down but no difference.
I have turning the small nuts at either side of the boot and also, stopped the roof half way and made some half turns to either nut on the metal arm on the back window section (when it lifts up) but still have this knocking noise.
I swear its coming from only the passenger side, about head height and im at the point of exploding as so annoyed with repeat visits and no success :(.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas or encountered this before?

Thanks,

John

Apologies if you have already checked but loose locking wheel nut in the boot?

Something loose in a cubby hole.

Broken Spring

Bushes

Diff or gearbox bush

I'm afraid that while you may think it's in a certain area, it might not be where you think.

Good luck and sorry if i've been sod all help

Thanks for the suggestions!

It really does sound like its coming from the roof area (behind passenger head roof area) as opposed to the springs, I spoke the mechanic about the possibility of it being the suspension and he said it wouldn't be.

I've had the windows down too earlier today and it was still doing it. :(

feel like I've tried everything and got nowhere.

Paid over 20k for it and its full of issues :( so depressing.

Should have noticed this was in the e89 section.

Has the dealer heard this noise themselves?

Hi,

Yeh - the dealer has heard it himself. He thought it was really bad "trim noise" (twisting and creaking plastic sounds) which I do have a lot of but you can also hear a distinct knocking noise when going over bumps.

I thought of an idea to try out. Going to cover off the top and bottom of the nuts with rubber or felt tape (a small amount) and see if I still get the knocking noise, if not then I know its a nuts / bolt knocking, making surface contact. I came to that theory because the mechanic keeps saying he makes small turns to the nuts and the noise seems to ease up (at least he says it does).

Thanks,

I'v got an annoying noise too coming from the passenger side but its there all the time not just over bumps :!:

It's called the Mrs.

I have a 2011 Z4 with E89 motor, only done 14,000klm and have had several issues with rattle noises coming from behind the passenger seat. The dealer has fixed it but it comes back on occasions usually rough roads.

Also had a squeak in the dash by the instrument cluster, again fixed by the dealer but ever since then I have and a rattle which they can not seem to find.. So much for German precision:(

Did you ever get to the bottom of these .i have exactly the same noises in exactly the same places in my 2016 E89

The most rattle ridden car I have ever had. I have what sounds like a wire tapping in the region of the rear view mirror area.

Not an E89 but maybe worth a look. My E85 roll bar loops had to remove these to fit the BMW wind deflector, in doing so I broke one if the plastic clips internally on the roll bar loop cover, the incessant rattle of plastic drives me nuts as it's at ear level. Perhaps something similar with yours?

Just a thought, hope you resolve the problem
Cheers
