Knocking/Hopping when reversing and turning

Hi All,

I don't know if this is a common problem on the Z4 or not. Its an MY03 3.0i with 108 wheels:

Basically when reversing the car with over 50% lock either left or right, occasionally the car 'hops' to the side, from the front. It feels like the car's front wheels have suddenly skipped sideways around 0.5-1 inch. Its almost as though the steering rack or wheels are hitting something? There is an audible knock/clunk when it happens also...

Im aware this can often be a TADTS ("They all do that, sir") on some cars. It could also be due to worn ARB or wishbone bushes, however these should surely last more than 30,000 miles?! Could anyone please enlighten me?

Mine does it as I drop off the half inch transition step from drive to road on full lock in reverse. I'd assumed wide tyres, steering geometry set up and was nothing to worry about.

Also a 2003 on 108's

Mine does from time in time when the weather is cold. I've heard it is caused by "stiction" in the front struts. Nothing to worry about.

I've felt mine do it slightly, although had it alot worse on other cars i've owned.

I can only therefore assume it's a built in feature that when a Zed on 108's reverses on lock and it's wheels are truly on show it makes a few little yelps or skips causing passers by to see them and exclaim 'f*ck me those wheels look good on that car'

Interesting. My 05 does this. Seems to only happen as I'm backing out of the garage. That's when I notice it anyway.

My 04 on 107s does this too, generally when reversing off the drive, or down a slope elsewhere.

I'd be interested to know if it happens to non-runflat cars. I suspect the stiff walls may have something to do with it.

Happened to me today coming out of Sainsbury's in the wet, full lock reverse. I am on normal tyres (GSD3's)

Happens on mine from new for 3 1/2 years. On 108s. Reversing down hill on fullish lock left. Always been the same. Noise comes from the front.

Mine too... My old Boxster used to do it also on 18" wheels must be a geometry thing?

My Z does this in the cold. had the same problem on my old 328I. Nothing to worry about.
