Knocking from wheel

Noticed today as i took the other half to work hat every slight bump/pot hole it sounds like there is a knocking noise or something loose hitting the under side of my car :headbang: just seems like if its not one thing its another spent so much on repairs lately starting to fall out of love with the car, Can anyone suggest what faults it could be sounds dangerous to drive. :!: :thumbsdown:
 
:D Drop link possibly, had mine replaced recently and an easy cheap fix. If it is the drop link I would replace both if I was you.

Also worth checking the strut supports to the bulkhead, check the bolts are tight and torqued.
 
How can i test if it is that? Jack the car up wheel off and simple shake and see if there is movement/noise? How easy is it to replace myself to save some pennies? :oops:
 
Check your wheels studs are tight, if not then it could be drop link as Swiftly mentioned or even the braces under bonnet :thumbsup:

If it is the drop links then you need part number 5 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BT33-USA-06-2003-E85-BMW-Z4_25i&diagId=31_0649 and each drop link is secured with 2 hex nuts. If there is any play in the links they will knock when going over bumps etc, and will require replacement which is a dead easy job.

If its play in the front control arms & its bad enough to hear like you describe then grab hold of the front wheel at 3 & 9 & shake hard , you should feel the play which should not be there .
Alternatively the knocking could also be broken rear springs or even a broken backbox bracket :? all relatively easy,cheap fixes & routine stuff as these cars get older :thumbsup:
 
Cheers guys i had the front wheel off and took the bottom 17mm hex nut off but the top one was just turning didnt notice any excessive play on it but when i put the wheel back on and tightened it all up the noise was a lot more frequent. I think it will be the drop link arm so ill replace that tomorrow and hope ive not replaced a part that wasnt faulty! :? :headbang:
