If it’s an M Sport highline it will have black/black from factory
Stop the press! Isn’t the Highline one spec and M Sport the other?
Yes and then there is “M Sport Highline”👍

My late 2009 35i has shiny chrome surround with matt silver vertical gills. I have also added the facelift side indicators which lift the look a lot I think. In the past, all the six cylinder models had the chrome chrome treatment to distinguish them from the 4 cylinder models, but over time other options and after market grills means prop,è fit what suits their taste…

Think I might go chrome/black. Seems like might have been an option for the 35i.
TBH I don't think BMW offered different kidney grilles in the option list (surprising as they don't normally miss a trick when it comes to charging for extras).
Depending on the 'model', they supplied a colour combo of grilles. I think it was to help differentiate models; ie SE spec, M sport, Highline, M-sport highline, etc, etc. Highline was the equivalent of other models' shadow line, that is any chrome being black, along with other 'goodies'.

The aftermarket world has muddied the waters by offering every combo for every model.

I put M4 grilles on my F33 (double slats all black) which were never an official option for the car but it looked good IMO.

Pondy, I’m in danger of coming out in support of you again… caught myself before it happened so you can relax… (the F33 looks ‘right’ with that grille, just don’t tell anyone i said so)

Why are they both called Highline? What’s Highline anyway? You’ve either got an M Sport pack or you haven’t right? If you haven’t, you’ve got a Highline. With a black/chrome grille by the looks of the brochure.

It’s all too much.

The E89 came as standard, M Sport and M Sport Highline, highline is like a special edition model. For the OP from the factory the E89 I believe came only with chrome and black on all cars except the 35is which had chrome / Matt silver grills or as already pointed out Highline version which came with gloss black / black. The gloss black and black are available as spares to buy from BMW. FWIW I think the chrome / black grills really date the car and the car looks much better either with the black on black or chrome / silver depending on the colour of the car.

It's funny isn't it - I'm looking at the black/black because I think the chrome/chrome dates the car (deep sea blue)!
I've found a couple images that have chrome/black that I think I prefer.

I was under the impression only 35i up had chrome grille surround and silver fins.
Rest chrome and black fins like my car....but i painted fins silver.
But sometimes i repaint black, for a change.

Neighbour at work said he liked the black grille, looked like jet engine intakes.
Sometimes i think too much silver.

I love the silver grills. They look class.

Not a fan of the standard black / chrome.

I think black / black looks best if you prefer black.

There was a very strange option of carbon fibre grills.
I have never seen any or can find any pictures or information about them.

I swear I have a picture of them in a brochure.... off to do some research.

Honeastly. Does it matter that much?
They pop in and out in abouty five minutes, so why not just fit the ones that YOU think look nicest on YOUR car.
You can change them back almost instantaneously.

I think the silver fins work well with your car colour. I think they stick out too much on mine.

Yeah they are the 'dogs' bollox Dave. Sooo much better than the dull OE Style. I get lots of positive comments on mine (and my spinning wheel centre caps).

Each to their own but I think they look crap, don’t even think they look great on the G29 but on the newer car it works better. The tradition grill is the hallmark of a BMW, what makes it instantly recognisable as one, yet these grills takes all of that away. Makes the car look like a cheap Chinese knock off. Entirely my humble opinion mind.

I'm still considering what to do with my new bumper. I currently have the black with chrome, which are damaged and I have been, graciously, given a pair that are the silver (light grey) with chrome, but was originally thinking of going all black. So I got these three photos to see what I'd prefer....

I think it also depends on the colour. On my car -deep sea blue- the chrome and silver really looks good. With the mineral ? Grey, maybe all black could look good. Needs to be shiny black but that’s just my opinion :D
